Senior Engineer in Transmission System Planning provides subject matter expertise in transmission system impact studies and system solutions development for interconnections of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) in the Eversource electric system. The role requires extensive experience associated with the modeling, analyses, and planning level designs of transmission lines and substation facilities in an electric power system. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, stability, electromagnetic transient, and short circuit. This position also represents the company on regional and national transmission committees regarding DER interconnection matters for New England Power Pool (NEPOOL) and Independent System Operators of New England (ISO-NE).Essential Functions: Develop and maintain the system models for transmission studies. This includes:Collection and review of the forecast loads to be included in the modelCollection, modification, and review of a variety of electric system parameters including: equipment ratings, impedances, contingency sets, protection and control parameters, as well as system topologyCollection, modification, and review of DER modeling for steady state, stability, short circuit, and EMT analysesPerforms DER transmission system impact studies independently for the entire Eversource service territories. This includes:Preparation of study scopes based on determined study assumptionsVerification of technical information and models of DER applications according to modeling testing processes, and providing timely comments to DER customers for model updates and correctionsApplication of corporate planning standards in conjunction with any other applicable NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE reliability standards and criteriaDevelopment of solutions to mitigate identified significant adverse impacts by testing solution alternativesCoordination with ISO-NE staff, DER and Distribution System Planning, line and substation engineering, asset management, siting, environmental and permitting, operations, etc. for the determination of system impacts and proposed solutionsDocumentation and presentation of study results in study reportsCommunication of study updates and presenting study results to regulatory agencies, DER customers, and affected partiesOther supporting tasks include:Study process automation for routines with transmission analysis tools.Clear and effective communication of analyses results both verbally and in writingDevelopment of training modulesTraining junior engineersPerforming emergent storm assignments as needed during times of inclement weather or adverse system conditionsTechnical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
Knowledge with power system transmission analysis tools such as PSSE, TARA, ASPEN, PSCAD, or other similar analysis softwareKnowledge of programming language such as PythonKnowledge of new technologies including but not limited to photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and batteryKnowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply systemKnowledge of National, State and other planning standards and reliability criteriaGood written and oral communication skills, including formal presentation.Excellent team skillsEffective interpersonal skills, ability to develop strategic partnershipsAbility to achieve desired results by setting high standards for self and others, and accepts responsibility for outcomesEducation:
Baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering required - Electric Power Systems preferred. Advanced Degree is preferredExperience:
A minimum of 5 years of related experience. Relevant experience in planning, design, and/or operations related to transmission lines, substation facilities, with knowledge of power system planningLicenses & Certifications: Professional Engineer’s License preferred
Working Conditions:
Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.Compensation and Benefits:
