Senior Engineer – DevOps

Position Summary   

​​GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer with a passion for building high performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Description  

Our Senior Engineer is a key member of the engineering staff working across the organization to provide a friction-less experience to our customers and maintain the highest standards of protection and availability. Our team thrives and succeeds in delivering high quality technology products and services in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift quickly. The ideal candidate has broad and deep technical knowledge, typically ranging from front-end UIs through back-end systems and all points in between and passionate about applying DevOps concepts daily in their role as a DevOps engineer with strong infrastructure knowledge on Azure DevOps, Kubernetes, PowerShell, provisioning / deployment automation, and development knowledge on .NET and ASP .NET.

Position Responsibilities  

​​As a Senior Engineer, you will:  

​Scope, design, and build scalable, resilient distributed systems  

​Build product definition and leverage your technical skills to drive towards the right solution  

​Lead in design sessions and code reviews with peers to elevate the quality of engineering across the organization  

​Define, create, and support reusable application components/patterns from a business and technology perspective  

Utilize programming languages like Python, C# or other object-oriented languages, SQL, and NoSQL databases, Container Orchestration services including Docker and Kubernetes, and a variety of Azure tools and services

​Utilize developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication) to perform advanced-level Mobile/Web/UI design, implementation, and maintenance activities under minimal direction  

Work with Cloud managed partner team and GEICO teams on day-to-day activities to support GEICO Claims operations

Support and work with multiple partner and internal teams with the firewall requests, including providing guidance on requests and connection validations

Employ continuous delivery patterns and collaboratively work with developers to achieve successful continuous delivery solutions

Establish and employ continuous integration practices and tools

Build resilient services for extending and improving DevOps capabilities

Engage in cross-functional collaboration throughout the entire software lifecycle

Support triage calls at a tier 2 level with good technical problem solving, analytical skills, and logical thinking to provide resolutions to a diverse range of complex issues

Provide 24/7 operations support for production, other critical environments, DevOps multi-tasking and with clear communication skills

Collaborate, support, and work with managed cloud vendor

Coordinate with GEICO teams to support daily operations, releases, and disaster recovery exercises

Maintain and test on a regular basis our DRP / multi-regions high-availability systems.

Provide operational support on Commercial services portfolio and troubleshoot across multiple applications (L3 and  higher)

Represent the team and provide excellent 24x7 support on an on-call rotational basis

Determine systems software design requirements, ensure system/applications improvements are successfully implemented and monitored for better efficiency

Mentor other engineers   

​Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams  

Qualifications  

​Experience with design and development of ALM features

Development and Management EAP

Advanced PowerShell scripting skills

In-depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms

Advanced understanding of monitoring concepts and tooling Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code

Advanced programming experience within the .NET framework. Including C#, Visual Studio, SQL Server, ASP.NET, MVC, Web API, and REST

Proven understanding of microservices oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs

Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication)

Experience managing user Access, Service management on VM, upgrade patches, and change configuration are preferred

Ability to understand System design architecture topology diagrams

Knowledge of on CI/CD pipelines to streamline software development and deployment

Experience architecting and designing new and current systems

Advanced understanding of DevOps concepts including Azure DevOps framework and tools

Experience and knowledge with Enterprise Cloud platforms, enterprise data center technologies including storage platforms, networks, security infrastructure

Experience in security protocols and products: Understanding of Active Directory, Windows Authentication, SAML, OAuth  

Experience working as an Infrastructure, Middleware, DevOps engineer on Linux, Windows Operating Systems

Knowledge on DNS resolution, subnet masking, firewall concepts, and processes

Experience with software tools such as Microsoft ADO, SharePoint, PowerBI, Helix, Confluence or similar

Advanced hands-on experience creating Grafana operational dashboards.  Data visualization using Grafana is required

Experience in application monitoring and performance assessments using tools such as Dynatrace, Sentry, Grafana, Loki, or similar

Experience with data visualization tools

Experience with Automation scripting

Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: Python, PowerShell, Linux Shell, Ansible, Puppet  

Knowledge on SQL queries, Java, and .NET is required

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Excellent Communication skills

Strong problem-solving ability

Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment

Experience ​  

5+ years of proven experience in Cloud DevOps, especially on Azure environments & its offerings (PaaS, SaaS or IaaS), Kubernetes, Functions, Webapps, Network, Load balancing, Firewall and DNS.

5+ years of proven experience in PowerShell scripting.

5+ years of proven experience working with monitoring tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace and Application Insights.

5+ years of proven experience in Production support, incident triaging, Root Cause Analysis and on-call duties

4+ years of experience with building automation with Terraform.

3+ years of proven experience with build and release automation products (e.g. TFS, VSTS , Git, Jenkins)

3+ years of proven experience with Infrastructure as Code technologies (e.g. Terraform, ARM templates, CloudFormation)

4+ years of professional software development experience within the .NET framework (C# including object-oriented design)

3+ years of experience with architecture and design

4+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service

2+ years of experience in open-source frameworks

Understanding of Cloud APIs and Cloud technologies with some .NET & C# programing experience.

Understanding of OWASP and security best practices

Education  

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience   

$82,000.00 - $204,500.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
