Come and join this dedicated team as  a Senior Engineer – Electrical and Energy where you will be the execution master of Electrical Power Engineering and Energy Management at the Smelter Complex. The roles’ primary focus is the provision of competent technical support to the Operations, and to ensure that the standards, specifications and procedures are implemented on Operations and on projects.

Job Description

Job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Operation and project execution mastery is our prime function.Energy efficiency strategy management programmes in the fields of electrical, hydrocarbon, photo voltaic and steam consumption.Ensure that all energy consumption levels are baselined, monitored and audited for improvement purposes.Interface with EPCM’s and consultants to ensure that all projects are technically correct and optimally efficient.Major items of systems are maintained for optimal efficiency.Regulate the implementation of and maintenance to ETAP fault level, load flow and protection discrimination models.Asset management becomes an entrenched culture at the operations.New technology is evaluated and implemented as, when and where appropriate.Monitor and respond to quality of supply problems.Strive to entrench an energy efficient culture.Manage and monitor the Eskom load curtailment programme specific to the Mogalakwena Complex. Interface with Operations during planned load curtailment to reduce power consumption accordingly.Manage the power factor correction installations.Review the notified maximum demand requirements with Eskom on an annual basis.Update the essential load registers on an annual basis.Coordinate the monthly energy reports from the Operations, and consolidate savings for submission to the Executive on a monthly basis.Be actively involved in energy awareness campaigns.Prepare and update site issue-based risk registers.Identify opportunities to deploy new renewable energy sources.Provide managerial advise and support to Engineering Specialists and Senior Electrical Foremen as follows:Effective execution and monitoring of the Operations planned maintenance programme.Standards enforcement and quality assurance.Analysis and improvement.Planning and scheduling.Information management.Early equipment management.Training and development.Maintenance material management.Maintenance facilities and tools.

This role is at a GBF 6 level reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager Operations  

QualificationsMinimum of N.Dip in Electrical Engineering Heavy Current (NQF Level 6).GCC Mines and Works will be beneficial.Registration, with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), as a Professional Electrical Engineer, Professional Electrical Certified Engineer or Professional Electrical Engineering Technologist.A post-graduate degree in Electrical Engineering (NQF Level 7) will be an advantage.A qualification in Project Management will be advantageous.Advanced Management Programme or the equivalent will be advantageous (MDP or AMP)Registered as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) will be beneficial.

Experience

Minimum of 10 years experience working in the Mining, Process and utilities industry, 5 years’ of which must be in a management role and, with additional prerequisites as follows:5 years’ operational experience and 1 year testing and commissioning experience as part of an operational team that commissioned a plant with exposure to operate and maintain the following:Electrical power transmission and distribution equipment.Surface medium voltage and low voltage distribution systems.System earthing.Protection.Power and distribution transformers.Liquid resistance starters.Variable speed drives.Diesel generators.Overhead lines.Uninterruptible power supply systems.Fire detection.Communications enabled devices.Intelligent motor protection.Compressed air systems.Heating and cooling systems.Bulk electricity and power factor managementLarge mechanical and electrical drives applicationsAlternative fuel consumers.At least 1 years’ experience working with Energy Efficiency initiatives such as power factor correction, photo voltaic cells, variable speed drives, luminaires, time of use tariff, demand management, energy recovery, etc.

Knowledge and Skills

Advanced computer literacy skills as follows:Microsoft Word - intermediate.Microsoft Excel - advanced. Microsoft Power Point - intermediate.Microsoft Projects -intermediate.Power System analysis (ETAP etc.)AutoCAD - basic.Functional knowledge of power electronics, variable speed drives, thyristor drives, SCADA systems, mining automation systems, control and recording systems.Must be available to render on-site professional and technical assistanceMust be prepared to do standby work.Must be experienced in the operation and maintenance of mining machinery, electrical project management, construction, testing & commissioning and general equipment and infrastructure capability as described above.Must be familiar with the roles various stakeholders hold and the interaction and dynamics associated with each.Solid analytical, technical and fault finding abilities are required.Must have dealt with EskomDriver’s license code B.Red ticket (Certificate of fitness).Must be experienced in the design of electrical facilities and reticulation.Knowledgeable of the IEC and SANS StandardsProtection and grading experience
