**About the role:**
Working within the Product Packaging Team and the wider Packaging & Labelling department you will play a crucial role in advancing sustainability initiatives, focusing on the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects of packaging. This position typically involves a blend of research, data management, strategy development, and compliance monitoring to ensure that packaging practices align with sustainability goals.
**Your key duties and responsibilities:**
**- ESG:**
+ Ownership of the Product Packaging ESG improvement strategy and implementation plan.
+ Research and Data Management to build Life Cycle Assessments for packaging material.
+ Conduct comprehensive research on packaging materials and regulations to gather relevant data on sustainability practices.
+ Compile, verify, and maintain packaging data sets to track progress against sustainability goals.
+ Utilize industry databases and regulatory agency resources to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with environmental standards.
**- Quality Assurance:**
+ Recommend quality control limits and procedures, enforcing structural specifications to maintain packaging integrity in accordance with quality standards.
**- Cross-Functional Collaboration:**
+ Work closely with various departments such as R&D, manufacturing, quality assurance, and marketing to gather input on packaging design and ensure alignment with product requirements.
**- Testing and Validation:**
+ Conduct testing protocols driven by national and international standards to verify the functionality and safety of packaging solutions. Analyze test data to inform design improvements.
**- Problem Solving:**
+ Assess and resolve packaging-related issues with minimal supervision, applying engineering tools such as FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) to identify root causes and implement solutions.
**- Sustainability Initiatives:**
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement sustainable packaging strategies that minimize environmental impact.
+ Monitor industry trends and regulatory changes related to sustainable packaging to keep the organization competitive and compliant.
+ Develop knowledge bases on best practices in sustainable packaging to educate internal teams.
**- Documentation:**
+ Create and maintain documentation for work instructions related to new ESG packaging configurations. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements through accurate record-keeping.
+ Analyse packaging data to identify potential non-compliance issues and recommend corrective actions.
+ Generate reports using data visualization tools to present trends and identify compliance risks related to packaging materials.
**- Business Impact as a Senior Engineer:**
+ Work to achieve operational targets that significantly impact departmental results.
+ Independently manage large and moderately complex projects or assignments.
+ Potentially responsible for setting day-to-day operational objectives for the team.
**- Communication as a Senior Engineer:**
+ **Cross-Functional Collaboration:** Senior ESG Packaging Engineers often work with diverse teams, including R&D, manufacturing, marketing, and quality assurance. They must clearly articulate packaging requirements and design concepts to ensure alignment among all stakeholders.
+ **Technical Communication:** The ability to convey complex technical information in an understandable manner is vital. This includes writing clear specifications, documentation, and reports that meet regulatory standards. They should also be able to use visual aids effectively to support their explanations.
+ **Active Listening:** Senior ESG Packaging Engineers need to listen to feedback from team members, clients, and suppliers to address concerns and incorporate suggestions into their designs.
+ **Presentation Skills:** They may be required to present project updates, design proposals, or testing results to various audiences. Effective presentation skills help in conveying ideas persuasively and ensuring that all team members are informed of project progress.
+ **Mentorship and Guidance:** In a senior role, they often mentor junior engineers. This requires the ability to provide constructive feedback and guidance in a way that fosters learning and development within the team.
**Skills & Experience:**
+ Knowledge of ESG Principles, Value Engineering and Cost-Initiatives would be desirable.
+ Experience of Product & Process Validation activities.
+ Demonstrable experience of on-time delivery of complex technical projects and activities.
+ Building productive relationships with external parties (e.g. design houses and contract development and manufacturing organisations (CDMO’s).
+ Applying a range of statistical techniques incl. Design of Experiments (DoE) to product / process development activities.
+ Highly structured, ability to progress tasks in parallel, and proven problem-solving skills.
+ The ability to communicate effectively in Technical English (verbal and written) is essential.
+ Understanding of basic ‘graphic artwork development’ and printing techniques such as off-set litho, digital, flexography, gravure etc….
+ Highly computer literate i.e. Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
**Qualifications/Education:**
+ Education: Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, environmental science, business, or a related field.
+ Experience: At least 3 years of experience in ESG, sustainability, or data analytics preferred.
**Travel Requirements:**
Position may involve travel up to 25% of the time, mostly within Europe but overseas travel is expected. Most trips will include overnight travel).
**Working Conditions:**
+ This may be based in any manufacturing site within ConvaTec business with a hybrid working structure.
+ There is no specific requirement for fixed days on site but project and department activities shall be supported in appropriate locations.
**Special Factors:**
ConvaTec is a multi-national company, a degree of flexibility in working day may be required when working with multi-international based personnel.
