Scope of Position
Candidate will be responsible for applying first principles knowledge to develop glass compositions for optical communications applications, and, develop and optimize processes making such products to deliver industry-leading optical properties and distinct advantage. The candidate will be a subject matter expert in the area of fiber and glass processing, where he/she will be directly responsible for the completion of a subset of project objectives.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities Identify new product opportunities for optical fiber and provide technical expertise to process development projects to increase Corning’s capabilities. Provide leadership in problem solving through comprehensive fundamental understanding of glass chemistry and optical / mechanical property interactions, advanced technical knowledge, and empirical and modeling data analysis to develop novel designs and to improve product performance. Through close collaboration with the broader Research, Development, Commercial and Engineering communities, ensure that process requirements are understood and integrated to meet product requirements and division objectives. Lead or support industrialization/feasibility trials at the manufacturing plants for scale-up of new / improved products and processes meeting the desired performance requirements. Prepare process and technology transfer documentation. Actively file IP and write Internal and External Technical Reports. Required Education and Experience PhD in Glass Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related discipline 3-7 years' experience in Optical Fiber material processing and materials science Expertise in the state-of-the-art optical fiber technologies (commercial fibers as well as new advanced technologies such as multi-core fiber, hollow-core fiber etc.) Familiar with key optical fiber attributes and relevant design and process parameters that influence them Designing and hands-on execution of experiments. Analyzing data and drawing actionable conclusions from them Solid understanding of glass chemistry-property relationships Competency in industrial thermal and chemical processes. Experience in managing lab and pilot scale processes Familiarity with relevant characterization techniques Systematic problem solving Desired Experience Experience formulating glass compositions to achieve a set of target optical attributes Deep Knowledge of glass raw materials and formulation

The range for this position is $88,527.00 - $121,725.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
