Position Specific Description

The Senior Indirect Tax Analyst specializing in Sales Tax at NextEra Energy will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with state and local tax regulations. Our ideal candidate will be responsible for managing comprehensive sales tax filings, supporting business needs, performing tax and incentive research, supporting audit activities, and maintaining our tax engine. This position requires a thorough understanding of tax laws and regulations, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a dynamic team environment.

 

In this role you will perform comprehensive financial and transactional analysis, support indirect tax audits, complete moderate to complex compliance filings, and raise compliance issues to the Tax Manager. Additionally, you will participate in and oversee various projects, including process improvement initiatives. This position demands proficiency in handling large datasets, advanced analytical tools, and a strong understanding of indirect tax regulations.

 

Primary duties can include but are not limited to the following:
•    Prepare and file monthly sales and use, municipal utility, franchise, gross receipts, and motor fuel tax returns.

•    Conduct detailed tax research and analysis to interpret and apply tax laws and regulations.
•    Monitor changes in tax laws, regulations, and policies, and assess their impact to the company.
•    Resolve business issues and requests that require specialized attention.
•    Effectively communicate tax guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
•    Conduct detailed financial and transactional analysis 
•    Assist with the preparation of data for sales tax audits.
•    Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency in sales and utility tax compliance.
•    Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate sales and utility tax requirements into business processes.
•    Develop and maintain tax compliance procedures and documentation.

 

Preferred Qualifications:
•    Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field. CPA, MST, or equivalent certification preferred.
•    Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in sales and use tax compliance. Preferably in energy, fuel or construction industries.
•    Demonstrated experience in preparing and filing tax returns, conducting tax research, and supporting tax audits.
•    Strong knowledge of state and local sales and use tax regulations and compliance requirements.
•    SAP and Vertex experience preferred.
•    Experience with financial and tax software such as SAP, Vertex, Avalara, and Blackline.
•    Competence in using tax research tools and databases.

Job Overview

This job is responsible for the more complex projects associated with the maintenance of tax records and the preparation of all or specifically assigned tax returns, complex separate company corporate income tax and partnership tax returns and consolidated tax returns and related reports. Employees in this role may provide functional advice or training to less-experienced tax accountants.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
•   Assists in developing tax structures and strategies that defer, minimize, or eliminate foreign and U.S. taxes on existing and prospective company investments
•   Monitors all tax compliance activities and exposures, including tax return preparation and reporting, and the status of local audits and dispute resolution proceedings
•   Conducts financial and economic analyses
•   Develops and prepares the organization's financial plans and budgets, and interpreting financial reports and tax returns
•   Performs other job-related duties as assignedRequired Qualifications
