Senior Industrial Designer

The Senior Industrial Designer position will assist in the development of products related to distributed energy resources (DERs) and power conversion for renewable energy, microgrid, EV charging, crypto mining, and data center markets.  This role will work within the Product Development Engineering team to bring functional aesthetics, user functionality, and manufacturability design aspects to product development.  These aspects will be combined with customer and market requirements to create products that have lasting value, are user-centric, and are manufacturable. 

This position requires cross-functional communication, collaborating with various teams including manufacturing, strategic marketing, engineering, technical writing, and cost management to bring product designs from concept to production launch. The ability to understand the consumer requirements and needs will be crucial in ensuring that both functional and user interface needs are met while adhering to cost objectives.  Participating in new product development activities will be a key aspect of this role, which includes generating new product concepts and determining appropriate approaches for design research, product concept drawings, physical modeling, renderings, visualizations, and product presentations.  This position will work with product management, strategic marketing, and sales functions to gather stakeholder insights, identify latent user needs, and customer requirements to drive design concept ideation and development.

This position will work collaboratively with a variety of teams to define and create solutions to bring value to both internal and external customers. In addition, the Senior Industrial Designer must have good verbal and written skills, and a willingness to learn.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design or Graphics or equivalent.

Experience: 5 -7 years of experience in industrial design with additional design and modeling software such as Rhino, Blender, Keyshot, Twinmotion, or Alias. Proficient with 3D CAD software (Inventor, SolidWorks, etc.).

Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.Strong communication and teamwork abilities.Excellent conceptual skills and ability to rapidly ideate and describe concepts clearly.A current portfolio demonstrating strong product design, creativity, and critical thinking.Demonstrated experience in product design and development that is supported by a strong understanding of business objectives, product trends, manufacturing processes, and material properties.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master's Degree in Industrial Design.

Experience: 7+ years of experience in industrial design.

Experience in the development of distributed energy products, power conversions products, data center products, electrical products and/or electrical infrastructure.Knowledge of additive manufacturing, injection molding, metal fabrication, and other manufacturing techniques.Familiarity with rapid prototyping and 3D printing technologies.Understanding of sustainability practices in product design.

Travel: 10-25%

Work Schedule: This position works between the hours of 7 AM and 5 PM, Monday- Friday. Works a sufficient schedule to meet the expectations of the role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports the development of new products by being the subject matter expert in blending functional specifications, aesthetics, user-centric ergonomics, and manufacturing processes to develop products that have best in class user functionality and features.Works cross-functionally and collaborates with various teams including manufacturing, strategic marketing, product management, engineering, and cost management to bring designs from concept to final launch while meeting performance, cost, and schedule objectives.Determines appropriate approaches and executes design research, creates product concept drawings/sketches, physical modeling, 3D renderings/visualizations, and product presentations.Transforms concepts into reality using sketches, product renderings, and visual storytelling while collaborating with cross-functional teams to bring concepts to reality and communicate conceptual designs.Works closely with engineering, strategic marketing, and market research teams to validate specifications with real users, and ensures designs are technically feasible.Conceptualizes compelling ways of providing new value and innovation for our customers and end users.Understands the consumer to consider functional aspects along with aesthetic needs and cost objectives.Presents design concepts and progress updates to clients and stakeholders, incorporating feedback as necessary.Participates in new product development strategic activities including generation of new product concepts.Builds out and sustains rendering tools and libraries (colors, materials, finishes, lighting, environments) to support the efficient creation of 3D assets.Drives continuous improvement and innovation in design processes and product solutions.Supports marketing and sales teams by providing design insights and visual materials for promotional purposes and sales tools.Supports Technical Publications team in the creation of user and service manuals.Coordinates with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are producible and meet quality standards.Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
