SENIOR LECTURER / SENIOR CLINICAL LECTURER / LECTURER
The Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for appointment to a Senior Lecturer (SL) / Senior Clinical Lecturer (SCL) / Lecturer (L) /post within the Division of Community Paediatrics and Child Health, School of Clinical Medicine. This is a full-time, permanent academic position based in Johannesburg.
The Division of Community Paediatrics and Child Health is dedicated to advancing child health through high-quality teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate training, research supervision, and community engagement initiatives. The level of appointment will be determined based on the candidate s qualifications and experience.
1. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
All Roles (General Responsibilities)
Teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in paediatrics, child health, and community-based child health services. Curriculum development and innovation in medical and public health education. Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research students. Conducting independent and collaborative research in community paediatrics, child health, or public health. Academic citizenship, including contribution to faculty committees, outreach programmes, and collaborative research networks. Active participation in the university s transformation and equity agenda.Senior Lecturer (SL) or Senior Clinical Lecturer (SCL)
Provide academic leadership in teaching, research, and clinical service delivery (where applicable). Lead curriculum development and new academic programme initiatives in undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Secure research funding and grants to support postgraduate training and research projects. Supervise multiple postgraduate students to completion (at PGDip, Master s and/or PhD level). Develop productive partnerships with external organisations to enhance academic, research, and consultancy opportunities.Lecturer (L) & Clinical Lecturer (CL)
Deliver high-quality teaching and learning activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Develop and improve student training curricula. Engage in clinical teaching (if applicable) in primary health care and community-based settings. Participate in ongoing research projects and contribute to scientific publications. Assist in student assessment and mentorship activities.2. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Senior Lecturer (SL)
Essential: A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Paediatrics, Child Health, Public Health, or a related discipline. Evidence of independent research with at least 8 peer-reviewed publications in accredited journals. Demonstrated experience in postgraduate student supervision (minimum of 2 Master s students graduated). Proven ability to attract external research funding. Teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Desirable: Formal qualification in Health Sciences Education. Experience in curriculum design and academic leadership.Senior Clinical Lecturer (SCL)
Essential: A specialist qualification (MMed, FCPaed, or equivalent) in Paediatrics & Child Health, with at least 3 years post-specialist registration experience. Registration with HPCSA as a Specialist Paediatrician. Experience in clinical teaching, including supervision of registrars. Research experience with at least two peer-reviewed publications. Desirable: Evidence of ongoing research and ability to promote research in clinical settings. Successful supervision of postgraduate research projects.Lecturer (L)
Essential: A Master s degree in Paediatrics, Child Health, Public Health, or a related field. Demonstrated ability to engage in research and academic teaching. At least 1 peer-reviewed publication or evidence of active research involvement. Prior experience in teaching undergraduate medical students. Desirable: Enrolment in or progress towards a PhD. Postgraduate teaching experience.Clinical Lecturer (CL)
Essential: A specialist qualification (MMed, FCPaed, or equivalent) in Paediatrics & Child Health. Registration with HPCSA as a Specialist Paediatrician. A Master s degree or equivalent professional qualification in the Allied Medical Disciplines, focusing on Paediatrics & Child Health. Registration with HPCSA as a health professional practitioner (preferably with paediatric experience). Experience in clinical teaching and supervision. Desirable: Evidence of research engagement (conference presentations, publications, or research collaborations). Prior involvement in community health initiatives, evidence of providing technical support to development agencies or other NGOs working in child health.3. EMPLOYMENT DETAILS & REMUNERATION
