Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Senior Machine Learning Scientist for our Defense Enablement division supporting our Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) business. This position is remote, but would prefer candidates in Columbus, Ohio.  Candidates should also expect at least 25% travel annually to support client meetings and other engagements.

 

Battelle’s Defense Enablement Division provides cutting edge lifecycle research, development test and evaluation services for the Department of Defense warfighter.  Our services include high hazards research of the latest chemical and biological agent detection, protection, dissemination, and decontamination solutions leveraging our exceptional scientific and engineering workforce and our state-of-the-art laboratories and test infrastructure.

The qualified candidate for this position will lead T&E digital modernization efforts across the division with specific focus on the enhancement and development of a digital framework to facilitate T&E advancements within data engineering, digital twin technologies, AI/ML applications, and AI assurance testing.  Candidates should be able to lead a diverse and matrixed team of professionals in the development of a broad range of AI/ML solutions.  
 

Responsibilities Architecture Design: Establish and optimize AI/ML architectures, ensuring they meet the needs of the business while maintaining high standards of scalability, reliability, and integration with other systems across the organization.AI/ML Solution Development: Design, implement, and optimize AI/ML models and systems to support application development, focusing on performance, scalability, and maintainability to meet CBRNE mission needs.Data Engineering: Develop and manage data pipelines and frameworks for efficient data collection, storage, processing, and transformation to support AI/ML workloads, digital twin technologies, and other RDT&E needs (e.g., synthetic data generation, AI assurance and safety).Digital Twin Development: Design, implement, and maintain digital twin models for simulation, prediction, and optimization of DoD research and testing requirements.Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional and heavily matrixed teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians to deliver AI-powered applications and solutions to enhance our technical services.
 Key Qualifications Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field with specialized expertise in AI/ML engineered solutions. A Ph.D. is a plus.Clearance: Currently possess DoD Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain/maintain a TSExperience:5+ years of experience in AI/ML research and application development.Strong background in software development, with expertise in Python, Java, C++, or similar programming languages.Proven experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, or similar.Experience in building and managing data pipelines (e.g., Apache Kafka, Apache Spark, AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure).Hands-on experience with digital twin technologies and the application of AI/ML models to simulate real-world systems.Technical Skills:Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms, deep learning, and statistical modeling techniques.Expertise in building and optimizing AI/ML architectures for large-scale production environments, including establishing frameworks to standardize data, workflows, and processing.Solid understanding of data engineering principles, including ETL processes, data warehousing, and real-time data streaming.Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.Soft Skills:Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
 Preferred Qualifications Experience with AI/ML vulnerability and assurance testingExperience with model interpretability and explain ability techniques.Contributions to open-source AI/ML projects or research publications.Experience managing diverse teams of individuals to meet complex mission requirements.
