Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Senior Manager, Accounting will be a key leader within the Controllership function overseeing Strava’s accounting operations, driving efficiency, scalability, and public-company readiness. This role will lead general ledger (GL) accounting, consolidations, revenue accounting and operations, the monthly close process, and related reporting.
As a senior leader on the Controllership team, you will play a pivotal role in strengthening our financial close process in accordance with US GAAP. You will collaborate cross-functionally to enhance financial operations, drive accounting system implementations and improvements, and support Strava’s continued growth. Additionally, you will mentor and develop a high-performing accounting team, aligning team development with company objectives and fostering a culture of operational excellence.
We follow a flexible hybrid model that generally translates to around half your time on-site in our San Francisco office—roughly three days per week.
You’re excited about this opportunity because you will: Lead and manage all aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including consolidations, preparing and/or reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, and maintaining the general ledger system. Oversee revenue accounting and operations, ensuring accurate recognition of subscription and partnership revenue in accordance with US GAAP. Lead system implementation and enhancements to support subscription revenue accounting, ensuring scalability, automation, and compliance with revenue recognition standards. Optimize and scale accounting policies, procedures, and systems to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and compliance. Drive process improvements, incorporating best practices in system design, automation, and operational workflows. Partner with external auditors and support the audit process, ensuring a smooth and efficient engagement. Ensure the integrity of financial data and key metrics, delivering timely and reliable reporting to support business decision-making. Collaborate cross-functionally with FP&A, Legal, People, Partnerships, and other key stakeholders to ensure alignment and accuracy in financial reporting. Play a key role in public company readiness, including Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance and internal control enhancements. You will be successful here by: Developing, implementing, and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, calendars, checklists, and process documentation to ensure compliance with corporate policies and US GAAP. Strengthening internal controls and compliance, partnering cross-functionally to enhance reporting, process controls, and risk management. Tracking key accounting and revenue metrics, analyzing trends, and leveraging data insights to drive process improvements and operational efficiency. Demonstrating high data literacy, using financial and operational data to support decision-making and improve the accuracy and timeliness of reporting. Leading and supporting audits, including external financial audits and SOX compliance, by ensuring proper documentation, records, and review procedures. Proactively identifying and resolving accounting anomalies, conducting research to ensure accuracy and completeness in financial reporting. Serving as a subject matter expert on accounting and revenue operations, collaborating with business stakeholders on cross-functional initiatives. Driving system enhancements and implementations, particularly for subscription revenue accounting, to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Developing and maintaining deep expertise in accounting systems and tools, independently troubleshooting and resolving issues to support operational excellence. We’re excited about you because: Proven experience leading and managing the end-to-end close process, including consolidations, revenue accounting, and monthly reporting. Expertise in NetSuite ERP (preferred) and experience with accounting system implementations and optimizations, particularly for revenue accounting. Experience with close management tools like FloQast, ensuring an efficient, well-documented, and accurate close process. A track record of designing, implementing, and continuously improving close processes and internal controls, balancing operational risk, efficiency, and quality. Strong knowledge of US GAAP and revenue recognition standards, with the ability to interpret and apply accounting guidance effectively. Deep experience driving process improvements, optimizing workflows, and enhancing automation in accounting operations. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, including experience querying data from systems like Snowflake and using data visualization tools to present financial insights. A data-driven mindset, leveraging key accounting and revenue metrics to drive insights and decision-making. Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy, ensuring financial integrity and compliance. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field. 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a mix of operational accounting, revenue accounting, and leadership responsibilities. We take a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on the department and your location. Salary ranges are categorized into one of three tiers based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. We will determine the candidate’s starting pay based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. We may modify these ranges in the future.
