The Senior Manager, Controls and Automation job exists to coordinate and oversee all Controls and Automation activities in the Waters Taunton facility. A primary activity is to support the implementation of the new Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Process Control System (PCS) in the newly-qualified Taunton Precision Chemistry Manufacturing Facility. The Taunton plant produces all of Waters’ stationary phase LC media utilizing specialized chemical processing equipment. The plant is highly automated and virtually “paperless”, with the MES and PCS serving as critical components of a new, “Industry 4.0” Integrated Manufacturing System.
Responsibilities Responsible for all Controls and Automation activities in the new Taunton Precision Chemistry Plant.Oversee all MES implementation activity including the development, testing, and upkeep of innovative, automated electronic procedures (“Master Batch Records”), most of which are quite complex, for over 700 unique products manufactured at the facility. Ensure a smooth general operation of the MES as factory orders communicated from SAP are executed.Oversee all PCS activities in the new plant, including the development and upkeep of InBatch recipes (comprised of unit procedures, operations, and phases, all of which together are used as “building blocks” for complete batch manufacturing procedures) and management of the HMI and SCADA/Galaxy database.Oversee the procurement, installation, and upkeep of control system hardware including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), field instruments/devices, VFDs, motor starters, wiring, etc.Provide leadership and direction for all controls and automation activities within the Taunton facility. Lead a team of engineers and technicians to accomplish the above.Troubleshoot technical issues with the MES and/or PCS, and provide solutions, often on short notice, and sometimes after hours, in a fast-paced production environment. Utilize the LEAN Daily Management System to identify areas for continuous improvement.Work with Waters IT as a primary “business user” contact for the Taunton Integrated Manufacturing System, to ensure that the systems are properly configured, maintained, and in compliance with applicable requirements. Provide support as needed when systems and/or interfaces are upgraded or otherwise modified.Support quality and compliance efforts for the site.Practice organizational effectiveness and employee development. Qualifications Minimum BS in Chemical Engineering or similar field.Minimum 5-10 years’ experience in an automated chemical process environment utilizing an MES.
