Senior Manager, National Tax Office-Partnerships-Real Estate Focus

Job Summary:

The BDO National Tax Office (NTO) Advisory practice provides technical leadership and support to firm client service professionals and alliance firms on tax matters, new legislation and Treasury guidance, articles on key tax issues and working with marketing and Tax quality control to ensure high level of information that is disseminated internally and externally.  The Senior Manager, National Tax Office, Partnership Tax will collaborate amongst NTO professionals and with tax leadership to drive communication efficiencies.  

A Senior Manager in BDO’s National Tax Office (NTO) Partnerships group, is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives and various partnership specific items including but not limited to section 704(b) and taxable income allocations, capital account maintenance, liability analysis and allocations, section 734(b) and 743(b) adjustment calculations and Tax Receivable Agreement (TRA) calculations. In this role the NTO Partnerships Senior Manager applies their knowledge and experience to understand potential partnership taxation issues and assists in the preparation of partnership specific computations. The NTO Senior Manager is key to the leadership team of the NTO Partnership Practice and actively participates in the development of the group. In addition, the NTO Partnerships Senior Manager is an active participant in process improvement and team-building initiatives, maintains client relationships, and acts as a source of guidance to other team members.
 

Job Duties:

Tax Specialization

Maintains and develops an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding partnership taxation

Research

Identifies when research is needed, clearly and concisely frames issues to be researched, and clearly and concisely reports the analysis Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provides research methodology for an efficient research process Trains associates and senior associates on research skills and helps to appropriately frame tax issues for analysis Involves firm specialists, as appropriate

Tax Consulting

Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes Applies the combination of tax knowledge and knowledge of business/industry to recommend solutions Maximizes client benefits, especially by decreasing client taxes, while managing risk Implements applicable Firm strategies Manages client expectations

Tax Specialization

Develops an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding partnership taxation  Participates in organizing and conducting effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization involving Firm specialists at a minimum of once per year

Strengthening Our Firm

Participates in office, regional, and national client service efforts Participates in national, regional, Firm, and Alliance meetings and supports related activities Participates in national Industry initiatives Ensures the national business line conforms with the Firm’s technical standards by examining office review reports from the Director of Quality Control and Technical advisors

Risk Management

Displays appropriate knowledge of firm regulations and guidelines as stated in the firm’s business line quality control manuals  Provides on-the-job training Puts the interests of the Firm above the interests of a client when resolving issues Engages BDO technical, tax, consulting, valuation, and other professionals to resolve client issues

Other duties as required

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments Trains associates and senior associates on how to use all current software tools Acts as a career advisor to associates and senior associates  Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates  Trains and mentors’ associates, senior associates, and managers  Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates and managers
 

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree, required; focus in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics, preferred Master’s Degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred

Experience:

Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required Specialized partnership experience, required Prior supervisory experience, required  Private equity experience, both fund and portfolio company levels, preferred

License/Certifications:

CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), preferred Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred

Software:

Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, preferred Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.   National Range: $150,000 - $250,000
Maryland Range: $150,000 - $250,000 NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range:  $150,000 - $250,000 Washington DC Range:  $150,000 - $250,000
