Senior Manager, Office of Science Outreach

The senior manager of the Office of Science Outreach manages and is accountable for the results of a portfolio that includes National Chemistry Week, Chemists Celebrate Earth Week, Outreach Training, U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad, Chemistry Festival Grants, and Kids Zone. The portfolio also includes resources, recognition, and supports for ACS members and stakeholders participating in chemistry outreach activities. The position has oversight for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Office of Science Outreach portfolio of programs, products, and services. The position explores and implements strategies that enable the Office of Science Outreach to optimize operational excellence, impact, and engagement and advance ACS and Division priorities. The Senior Manager is responsible for budget development, oversight, and monitoring.

The senior manager collaborates with internal (i.e., Membership, Communications, Publications, Digital Experience, Society Business Solutions, Philanthropy, Washington IT) and external stakeholder groups to drive execution and increase the impact and value of Office of Science Outreach programs and services. The senior manager also partners closely with and provides support for governance groups and volunteer leaders and members engaged in chemistry outreach and informal education activities.

This role leads and provides support for the Office of Science Outreach’s people management actions including hiring, performance management, coaching, and professional development.

The position reports directly to the Director, K–12 Education, Engagement, and Outreach.

Position Accountabilities

Manages the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the suite of programs within the Office of Science Outreach, leveraging data-informed decision-making, customer-focus, and creativity. Leads and provides support for the Office of Science Outreach’s people management actions including hiring, performance management, coaching, and professional development. Collaborates with internal (i.e., Membership, Communications, Publications, Digital Experience, Philanthropy, Washington IT) and external stakeholder groups to drive execution and increase the impact and value of the Office of Science Outreach programming. Partners with governance groups to develop and implement strategy. Serves as liaison for special task forces and working groups as needed. Contributes to Society-wide initiatives and Division-wide strategic and staff engagement activities.

 

Education/Knowledge/Skills/Experiences

B.S. degree in the chemical sciences or STEM required. Strong expertise and experience in STEM outreach, volunteer engagement, or informal STEM education required. Minimum of 8 or more years of relevant experience including 2 years or more experience in a lead or supervisor position including project, staff, and budget management. Demonstrated ability to successfully lead people, processes, and projects. Skilled and effective cross-functional collaborator and communicator. Working knowledge of partnering with governance to develop and implement strategy.  Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are required.

Approximately 10% travel required, occasional weekend work may also be required.

DC-based: This role is based in our Washington, D.C. office. A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between $130,000-$145,000 per year.
