Senior Manager, Workers Compensation

This position reports to the Assistant General Counsel - Claims and is responsible for taking a strategic and data driven approach to managing the company’s workers’ compensation programs and leveraging that approach across the enterprise. The proactive approach contemplates not only active and forward-looking claims management, but also continuous development, implementation, and enforcement of processes related to the prevention, reporting, and handling of work injuries. 

Essential Job Functions:

Manage complex workers’ compensation (WC) claims and high-level strategic projects simultaneously to reduce costs and improve outcomes. Conduct financial analyses of program metrics to evaluate trends in program costs, losses, and the effectiveness of process improvement initiatives. Develop and manage workers compensation/risk strategies and processes to support corporate and claims management strategic objectives. Develop and manage workers’ compensation-related performance metrics and benchmarks. Direct Third-Party Administrator (TPA) to ensure proactive and aggressive management of all workers' compensation claims from initial loss to closure. Oversee WC Return to Work (RTW) Program. Regularly obtain and review WC loss runs to ensure data accuracy and opportunities to close cases, reduce costs etc. Take lead role at quarterly WC claim review meetings.  Monitor and evaluate the performance of selected defense attorneys. Stay current with key changes in the legal and regulatory environment impacting workers compensation. Manage workers’ compensation litigation budgets, evaluate adequacy of case reserves and advise on adjustments where necessary. Establish managed care procedures. Authorize reserve and settlements on higher severity workers’ compensation claims. Conduct analysis of claims data to facilitate decisions on workers compensation claims program structure and TPA staffing, direction of program to achieve maximum results, and use of additional resources to augment TPA capabilities. Ensure that insurance coverage positions are consistent with our policy language and contracts. Coordinate the assembly and execution of the discovery required by internal and external stakeholders. Coordinate reporting and investigation of work injuries with Operations and Safety.  OSHA reporting, state-level compliance, and other government reporting and legal compliance as required and needed. Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Analytic Skills: ability to think objectively, create, and interpret quantitative data sets Proficient in use and application of data analytics and use of workers’ compensation related metrics Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to arrive at meaningful, lasting solutions Ability to multi-task frequently and handle heavy task loads Strong negotiating skills Strong attention to detail Medical training a plus, but not required Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent work experience) 6+ years of multi state workers compensation (complex, litigated cases) experience with insurance carrier, third party administrator or insurance broker Experience with transportation-related claims preferred Extensive experience in CA workers’ compensation claims is strongly preferred CPCU, ARM, or other claims designation(s) preferred
