Inviting applications for the role of Manager/ Senior Manager Data Science Engineering Manager
The Data Science Engineering Manager will support the Membership, Digital Analytics Data Science pillar of the Enterprise Analytics Team. The role is responsible for leading our offshore data science engineering team, which operates, builds, and maintains BJ’s machine-learning-based systems, tools, and services. Reporting directly to the Director of Data Science, we are looking for candidates who will help build and manage the environment, data, pipelines to support the most exciting analytics problems across the company
Responsibilities
• Lead and oversee the offshore team, ensuring they stay engaged, meet deadlines, and deliver valuable work for BJ’s. Manage the team handling the execution, data engineering, software development, and machine learning operations for BJ’s data science solutions, including:
o Acquisition products
o Personalization products
o Voice of the member
o New Products
• Hands-on technical leadership, guiding the team in building, operating, and maintaining data science solutions
• Proactively recommend optimization opportunities across products
• Proactively drive team performance by identifying areas for improvement and encouraging automation and optimization in all processes
• Foster a high-performance culture, ensuring the team is continuously developing and working on meaningful tasks
• Monitor team workload and productivity, ensuring that every team member is fully utilized and delivering impactful results
• Approve code changes and be hands-on in developing new features, ensuring the team adheres to best practices in coding and development
• Identify and implement process improvements, always seeking out opportunities to automate and optimize workflows to enhance efficiency
• Partner with internal BJ’s team to develop “sprints” utilizing agile principles that fully utilize engineering team
Qualifications we seek in you
Minimum Qualifications / Skills
• BSc in Computer Science, engineering (or related area), or equivalent experience
Preferred Qualifications/ Skills
• Relevant years of experience in algorithms, data structures, and object-oriented programming
• Experience in optimizing deployment pipelines for CI/CD tools (such as Jenkins)
• Experience in producing and leading the team to build a clean, maintainable, and thoroughly documented codebase by adhering to best software engineering practices
• Understanding of data science use cases for retail, namely in the marketing, digital and operations space
• Experience with building and project managing data science solutions, including but not limited to ETL, ML models, ML Ops frameworks and delivery mechanisms
• Proven ability to retrieve and manipulate data from various APIs
• Extract actionable insights from complex datasets using data mining, statistics, and database techniques to measure/understand/improve member acquisition/engagement KPIs
• Expertise in maintaining and organizing large datasets with text-based information, including cleaning, structuring, and updating tables in databases such as SQL, NoSQL, or cloud storage solutions for efficient querying and analysis
• Strong programming skills in at least one object-oriented programming language (Python, SQL, Java)
• Experience with cluster-computing frameworks (e.g. Spark, Hadoop)
• Experience configuring executing large, complex data pipelines with AWS/GCP/Azure technology stack (including distributed computing)
• Management/team lead experience, experience working with global and remote teams
• Experience guiding teams in addressing the technical and delivery challenges
• Implementation experience in building machine learning algorithms and applications, deploying and maintaining NLP models
• Eager to learn new algorithms, new application areas and new tools
• Understanding of data science automation tool (e.g Sagemaker, Databricks, etc.)
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide detailed reports on team performance and collaborate effectively with stakeholders
