Job Summary
Make a significant impact in ecological research and innovation as a Senior Marketing and Communications Specialist supporting the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), operated by Battelle and funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Join our team and apply your expertise to craft and execute marketing and communication strategies that elevate both internal and external engagement while amplifying the brand presence of the NEON program and Battelle.
Consulting with leadership, employees and external partners—including the NSF—you will play a vital role in expanding the program’s visibility and nurturing engagement with the science community. Your strategic vision and creativity will be instrumental in connecting audiences and driving the success of our initiatives.
Reporting directly to Battelle's Director of Marketing Communications, you will be at the forefront of our mission to solve the world's most pressing scientific challenges. This role requires some travel (15%) to connect with stakeholders and bring the NEON story to life on a broader stage.

About NEON
NEON is a continental-scale observatory dedicated to collecting long-term ecological data across the United States, including Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico. This open-access data is essential for understanding the dynamic changes in U.S. ecosystems. NEON's standardized data collection supports critical scientific research across various areas of science, providing valuable insights that drive informed decision-making and impact for the nation.
Preferred Qualifications Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or a related field. Experience: 8-10 years of experience across marketing, communications, social media and media relations, with agency experience a plus.Communication Excellence: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, complemented by strong interpersonal abilities, emotional intelligence and grammatical precision.Social Media Proficiency: Experience developing social media content and managing campaigns across various channels. Strategic Flexibility: A flexible mindset paired with strong strategic thinking capabilities, organizational acumen and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.Project and Team Management: Proven ability to counsel peers, manage projects and work effectively within a collaborative team environment.Willingness to Travel: The ability to travel 15% for direct stakeholder engagement and participation in key events and activities.Technical Proficiency: Experience with Salesforce, MS Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), social media channels and content management platforms.
