Your Opportunity

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer specializing in Vehicle Fueling Infrastructure, you will work on or lead tasks and support larger projects as a team member under the guidance of a Senior Engineer and practice-area Principal.  You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, design, and specification of Vehicle Fueling Systems of all types – with an emphasis on hydrogen, as well as support of compressed natural gas, petroleum and HD EV charging – ensuring adherence with the client’s project parameters, verifying compliance with applicable codes and meeting engineering standards and best practices.

The ideal candidate will have a California mechanical-P.E. license, have experience in designing hydrogen vehicle-fueling infrastructure and other fuel types, and the ability to lead the design-engineering efforts for such fueling-infrastructure projects. Participating in a collaborative design process, assisting in business-development pursuits, interfacing with other design disciplines inside and outside of Stantec and mentoring the junior staff are also key roles. Candidates with a mechanical engineering degree that have the requisite experience and that have achieved EIT status or are on track for achieving EIT status will also be considered.

Your Key Responsibilities Provide work under the direction of the practice-area Principal and Lead Senior Engineer as outlined below. Also collaborate with and support other disciplines and operating units within Stantec as required. Mechanical PE registration in California, as well as registration with NCEES. Experienced with design of gas-compressor systems, including high-speed, high-pressure (4000 PSI+) systems, and associated high-pressure piping and tubing designs, preferably compressed natural gas (CNG), as well as hydrogen. Interface with and direct a Mechanical Designer/Drafter to prepare BIM- and CAD-based construction drawings for fueling facilities and infrastructure.  Includes preparing design concepts and markups for process-piping systems in PDF format and direct Designer in preparation of plans, details, and process-flow schematics. Experience with participating and offering technical inputs to HAZOP studies in hydrogen refueling. Lead and mentor other fuel-team junior staff, including project engineers, EITs and designers. Familiar with Master Format/CSI specification structure for equipment and product specifications. Strong technical- and report-writing skills, including native-equivalent proficiency in English. Competent in basic electrical-power design, including preparing preliminary electrical-load schedules and conceptual single-line diagrams for 480V 800-2500A compressor-drive schemes. Able to occasionally prepare or modify drawings in Revit and/or AutoCAD, though Designer is primarily responsible for preparing drawings. Lead QC efforts to verify design documents meet project requirements and are free of errors. Research equipment and materials as needed to fulfil client and project requirements. Work with architectural, electrical, structural, civil, and other design disciplines in the coordination of facility designs. Represent the fuel-design team at inter-discipline-design meetings, including virtual and in-person meetings. Review submittals against specifications and design drawings.  Assist with collecting data and Perform calculations to analyze and design fueling-infrastructure subsystems using company-standard software, practice-area templates or worksheets and proprietary manufacturer software. Research and conduct interpretations of drawings, codes, and regulations. Lead or participate in field inspections of in-process or completed project work and prepare observation reports and punch lists. Support the practice-area principal to develop proposals, to include writing or editing proposed work-plan narratives and assisting to estimate work hours by task and staff for proposals. Perform other duties as assigned by the practice-area Principal and other senior engineering and architectural staff. Experience designing gasoline & diesel fueling systems, including underground and aboveground tank configurations, dispensers and leak-monitoring systems is a plus but not required. Your Ideal Capabilities and Credentials Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others in both oral and written mediums. Experience with or understanding of fluid-process systems. Familiarity with PLC-based controllers, actuated valves, etc. Understanding of engineering mathematics and fluid dynamics. Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought. Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, building programs and other similar material. Basic understanding of Revit and its use as a drafting/design tool; proficiency is a plus, including experience in collaborative environments using BIM360. Basic understanding of AutoCAD. Basic understanding of electrical-power systems, including electrical single-line diagrams. Basic understanding of conceptual block diagrams in mechanical- and electrical-controls concepts.   Ability to receive direction, follow process and accept feedback and suggestions from Senior Engineers. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, including preparing documents suitable for presentation to client.
