The Senior Medical Technologist performs tests requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, with minimal supervision by supervisory personnel, in only in those specialties in which the Technologist is qualified by education, training and experience. The position is responsible for assuring that a given test system is operated in accordance with the laboratory’s procedure manual and that the applicable quality control requirements are met. The Senior Medical Technologist provides support to the department in the areas of quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, R & D, and the completion of special projects. The incumbent complies with all company and departmental policies and procedures.
Pay Range: $36.97+ per hour
Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

Responsible for performing assigned tests in accordance with the laboratory's procedure manual including: Ensuring that applicable quality control requirements are met. Responsible for proper use of lab instrumentation including pipettes and their calibration. Responsible for knowing and using all computer function associated with performing the work in this department. Maintaining laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition. Adhering to all established laboratory safety requirements. Using (a) personal protective equipment, including latex gloves (b) engineering controls and/or (c) work practice controls as directed by management. Protecting patient confidentiality at all times. Responsible for bringing any actual or potential deviation from standard or accepted testing procedures to the attention of the Technical Supervisor/Manager as well as helping to investigate them. Responsible for routine and special troubleshooting techniques for all assays. Uses creativity, prudence, and independent judgment in dealing with problems under routine and/or adverse circumstances. If qualified and delegated, responsible for performing duties of Technical Supervisor and using good judgment in making departmental decisions in his/her absence. Responsible for cost effective management at the bench level. Responsible for the proper storage of all specimens, worksheets, and other related paperwork. Responsible for knowing the use of all Quest Diagnostics forms associated with the department such as confirmation, panic values, miscellaneous reports, etc. Trains, coordinates and/or assists with training/orientation of employees. Ensures that an adequate inventory of reagents, parts, and supplies is maintained so that test results are not delayed. Assists Technical Supervisor/Manager/Technical Director with performance evaluations and departmental budget preparations as requested. Performs, coordinates and assists with new method or new instrument validation studies as well as the validation studies required for changes in current methods or instruments Responsible for instrument comparison, calibration verification, calculation verification in coordination with QA Coordinator. Responsible for reviewing training profiles twice a year and correcting or adding instructions as needed. Responsible for assisting in keeping employees informed with regard to department and company policies. Actively supports and complies with laboratory policies and procedures. Establishes and maintains an open, friendly environment within the department ensuring that each individual employee is treated with respect, dignity, and consideration by all members of the Quest Diagnostics team. Assumes the responsibility for setting a proper example of a role model and maintains a positive attitude. Contact with clients will be required, good customer service skills important. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by competent authority.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Work Experience:
Minimum qualifications for supervisory duties within this job are defined below:
Master of Science Degree in biological or physical science and four (4) years of work experience as a Medical Technologist with at least 2 years in the designated laboratory specialty. At least six years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience subsequent to qualifying as a Medical Technologist.Preferred Work Experience:
Experience as a Medical Technologist at Quest Diagnostics highly desired.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Able to work any shift and be able to stand for long periods. May be required to use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity. Color blindness may restrict the ability to perform certain duties.Knowledge:
Comprehensive knowledge of the designated discipline. Qualifications for this position pertain to full-time employees. One (1) of the following requirements for academic/experience criteria must be fulfilled. Master of Science Degree in biological or physical science and two (2) years of work experience. Bachelor's Degree in biological or physical science and three (3) years of work experience as a Medical Technologist. Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a graduate of an approved school of medical technology and three (3) years of work experience. The medical technology internship may be counted as one (1) year of experience. Certification by a validated competency examination board, such as AAB, HEW, HHS, etc. in the designated discipline and three (3) years of work experience.Skills:
Proven leadership and problem solving skills. Ability to plan, organize and complete all work assignments even under stressful conditions. Good interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with clients and all Quest Diagnostics employees. Ability to deal with confidential information in a discreet manner.
