Senior Microwave Satellite Earth Scientist
Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a Senior Microwave Satellite Earth Scientist. This scientist will provide support for the development of new microwave-based Earth-observing satellite instruments. Roles and Responsibilities: + Download and process raw satellite data. + Participate in activities related to detection of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) in microwave observations and support the calibration of microwave instrumentation. + Support instrument testing and instrument performance test verification. + Write code to create or adapt models for microwave remote sensing; adapt existing computer models from one programming language to another; run the code; generate plots, tables, and images from the model output; automate some of these tasks; assist with data interpretation. Document code, algorithms, procedures, and results. + Support the generation of manuscripts, presentations, reports, and proposals. This includes helping with the production of images, figures, tables, and charts. + Make presentations at project reviews or technical conferences as requested. + Participate in teleconferences, videoconferences, and in-person meetings as needed to support project activities. + Document discussions, action items, decisions, and questions as needed. Organize these records with related records, including any hardcopies and/or uploading of such documentation to appropriate websites, and organizing of information on those websites. + Provide programming support, mostly in Matlab. + Ensure backup copies of electronic records are current. Required Qualifications: + PhD in an Earth Science, Engineering, or Environmental Science discipline using satellite observations. + Ability to travel to support field calibration activities. + Comply with NASA & GSFC rules regarding IT security, proper use, as well as ITAR and EAR export control regulations. The candidate’s citizenship or visa status must allow unrestricted access to export-controlled information. + Expertise in Matlab is required. + Knowledge of microwave radiometers and associated calibration techniques, microwave atmospheric sounding techniques, satellite geolocation and simulation. + 10+ years of experience with active and passive microwave remote sensing, microwave radiometer ground and on-orbit calibration, satellite geolocation, and ground calibration processing system development Desired Qualifications: + Experience with software testing and debugging; collecting test requirements, composing tests plans, and tracking performance against test cases. + The candidate should have the ability to collaborate within a team environment and have the ability to work independently to deliver individual contributions. + Knowledge of programming languages other than Matlab, experience working with Google Earth, and/or GIS software would be desirable but not required. Operating systems may include Linux/Unix, real time Unix, Mac OS and Windows. + Experience with JPSS calibration/validation desired. Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
