Department Summary:

The Advanced Transportation Operations Network Management department is seeking a motivated and innovative Junior Staff Member to contribute to a portfolio of research projects focused on advancing air transportation management to ensure safe, efficient, secure, and resilient end-to-end operations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong critical thinking skills, the ability to understand and meet sponsor priorities, and a self-motivated approach to executing tasks with minimal supervision. This role offers an exciting opportunity to engage in projects within the department's focus areas and contribute to high-quality technical work products that support sponsor strategic and project-level outcomes.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Project Contribution: Perform technical development activities in research projects involving concept development, requirement definition, rapid prototyping, data capability integration, and end-user evaluation.Technical Support: Provide technical support to project teams, ensuring timely execution of project plans and impactful results.Collaboration: Work collaboratively with project leadership to ensure success outcomes by applying innovative thinking and contributing to project objectives.Stakeholder Interaction: Develop working relationships with sponsors and industry partners to understand their challenges and contribute to strategizing solutions and proposing actionable research ideas.

Basic Qualifications:

Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience3+ years of experience with technical skills in data science, machine learning, software integration, and/or data visualization development.Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute to collaborative efforts.This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics as applied to transportation systems.Bachelor’s or an advanced degree in a relevant field. Experience in areas such as weather impact modeling, air traffic flow management, air traffic operations, or airline operations is preferred but not required.Experience or coursework related to advanced air mobility, unmanned aircraft systems, or next-generation air traffic management systems.Demonstrated interest in supporting Federal Aviation Administration and/or Department of Transportation organizations or initiatives.Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to convey complex technical results clearly and effectively.Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to see higher level goals and understand priorities.Self-motivated with the ability to execute tasks with minimal supervision.Ability to engage with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to drive innovation and achieve strategic goals.This position requires the candidate to meet eligibility requirements for FAA Suitability. The work location is hybrid, requiring a blend of on-site and remote work.
