The Senior Petrographer will play a crucial role in diagnosing issues in concrete structures, providing insights into material selection, and collaborating with the technical service team and customers to address their specific needs. This position involves examining concrete samples to assess their properties, durability, and performance.   Essential Functions - % of Time 70% of Time Conduct comprehensive petrographic analysis of concrete samples using optical microscopy and other analytical techniques.  Evaluate the microstructure of concrete, including the assessment of aggregates, cement paste, and any deleterious materials.  Identify and diagnose concrete deterioration mechanisms, such as alkali-silica reaction (ASR), freeze-thaw damage, and sulfate attack.  Determination of degree of hydration and activation of cementitious materials.  Prepare detailed reports documenting findings, analyses, and recommendations for material specifications or remediation strategies Utilizes technical knowledge of materials and processes in order to manage analytical/technical service requests for petrography from a variety of business units. Manages requests includes directing resources, prioritizing and challenging requests, documenting findings, interpretations, and conclusions, and collaborating with colleagues. Respects confidentiality and the timeline defined with the requestor. Seeks assistance from colleagues who have complementary expertise to aid in technical service investigations.  15% of Time Collaborate with requestors (Technical Service Managers, people in Sales, members of R&D, and/or outside labs) to discuss priority and arbitrage  and further technical findings from internal and external investigations. On occasion, be included in meetings with customers to help with technical discussions.    15% of Time Maintains lab equipment and works with vendors to complete maintenance. Stays current on the industry to upgrade equipment and integrate new technology as is necessary.
