About the Medical Examiner:
The Department of Medical Examiner investigates and determines the circumstances, manners and cause of all violent, sudden or unusual deaths occurring within the County. Each year approximately 18,000 cases are reported to the Department, of which about half fall within its jurisdiction. We conduct about 5,700 autopsies per year, making it one of the largest medical and most technologically sophisticated examiner’s offices in the world, due to the complexity of cases investigated, including numerous high-profile cases.
What you will do:
This position is held by a licensed physician that has immediate charge of a small medical section within a larger medical unit or a small program of a medical facility.

Essential Job Functions
+ Performs administrative duties such as determining equipment and supply needs, addressing personnel-related issues, developing and revising work procedures for expediting workload or improving levels of service, and screening work.
+ Formulates policies and plans and directs the programs and medical work of the section or assists in such activities for a division of a medical department.
+ Oversees and/or performs medico-legal investigative examinations specializing in sudden, unexpected, and violent deaths as assigned and in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines and within established timelines.
+ Participates in the training of medical students, interns and resident physicians.
+ Coordinates the work of the section with that of other medical and paramedical services.
+ Consults and confers with officials of public health and law enforcement to coordinate interdepartmental activities as assigned.
+ Confers with consultants regarding care of patients and medical and diagnostic work performed, and coordinates the work of consulting physicians with the work of the section.
+ Supervises the maintenance of records and the compilation and preparation of reports.
+ Serves in an acting capacity in the absence of the Medical Director in responding to Board inquiries or procurement of decedent organs.
+ Assigns autopsy cases to doctors; tracks cases to ensure timely completion.
+ Provides autopsy case consultations to Deputy Medical Examiners.
+ Reviews autopsy case files for quality assurance.
Requirements
HOW DO YOU QUALIFY:
Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology* - AND - a fellowship in Forensic Pathology or equivalent training** - AND - One (1) year of experience in medical practice, post graduate training, teaching or investigative work.

+ California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.*
+ Certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.*
+ A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:
Physical Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds."

Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. It should be noted that County employees do not pay into Social Security, but do pay the Medical Hospital Insurance Tax portion of Social Security at a rate of 1.45%.
