Senior Principal Engineer, Electrical Gear

We are looking for a Sr. Principal Engineer, Electrical Gear to join our team in one of today’s most exciting technologies.  This role will report to the VP, Customer Installations Group and will be based in San Jose, CA.  This is a fully on-site, in office role. 

The Sr. Principal Engineer, Electrical Gear will drive standardization of end items and subcomponents in custom gear tailored to Bloom Energy’s needs. This position will be responsible for identifying the electrical gear (Switchgear, transformers, etc) required for Bloom Energy’s customer installations, working with the Site Design team to spec the gear, work with gear manufactures to ensure the gear is the best suited,  shortest lead time, and competitively priced for it’s application, and then transition the gear to the supply chain team for procurement.

A large part of the role will be to support the Supply Chain team technically in procurement of electrical switchgear / switchboard / transformers / rectifiers, etc, evaluating new vendors, developing new and novel technologies for combined function, reducing cost, and ensuring Bloom’s needs are met for future applications of Bloom Energy’s product.  This position will interface with a larger site design team: engineers, project managers, construction supervisors and Supply Chain Management team.

In addition, this position will drive the technical relationships we have with suppliers, and work with Installations Team Leadership on potential JV’s, acquisitions, and/or internal manufacture of critical gear that will support Bloom’s needs well into the future.

This position will focus on eliminating technical barriers and representing a highly technical product or service related to the power industry, and setting a forward strategy w/r/t partner selection and equipment offerings.  The Sr. Principal Engineer, Electrical Gear must have a strong understanding of a broad set of engineering, Supply Chain and construction solutions.

Job responsibilities include technical site analysis and conceptual design, managing partner relationships, driving technology to suit Bloom’s strategy, collaborating with partners on cost, quality, and delivery improvements. Knowledge of construction, electrical, mechanical applications is essential. Knowledge of low and medium voltage power systems and electronic principals is essential. An understanding of civil, structural and electro-chemical applications is beneficial.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Develop and execute a standardization plan for gear typesDevelop and execute a strategy for reduced lead times for electrical gearReview and provide technical support for evaluation of third party partners for Bloom Energy project deliverables.Work with the engineering and SCM teams to identify potential new partners for electrical gearDevelop  technical requirements with Installations engineering teamDevelop equipment standards and Site Design standards for the equipmentSet the forward strategy for gear types/vendors/standardsTechnical evaluation of partner quotations, and qualifying the partners proposal based on technical and commercial requirements.Assist in preparing technical comparison statements.Ensure partners proposals meet all Building, Construction and Electrical code requirements.Interface between partner and Engineering / Quality team for arranging Factory acceptance / witness test at the manufacturing location, prior to delivery.Support technical purchase order amendments.Partner proposal collaboration, including initial discussions for project scope deliverables and ongoing coordination during manufacturing.Coordinating with partners to resolve technical issues while installation & commissioning of equipment at site.Technical evaluation of price variations received from partners on account of new additions / deletion in the scope of supply.

Skills:

Must have solid knowledge of current market pricing & cost estimation.Collaborate with different teams to understand the sourcing requirements.Must be eligible to work in the US.Self-starter and desire to learn new things.An entrepreneurial spirit is essential.Excellent, verbal & written communication skills to build lasting relationships with people.Excellent time management, planning, negotiation, and partner communication skills.Ability to work constructively with senior experienced staff with diverse backgrounds and skills.Ability and desire to design and implement new company protocols is essential.Ability to work efficiently and effectively with multiple project and priorities.Partner evaluation & developing new partners for various products.Knowledge of codes (NEC, NFPA), standards (UL) and regulations (city, state and federal).Ability to switch between the strategic (e.g. impact of Bloom Energy technology on customer’s long term business) and tactical (e.g. qualification of 3rd party equipment).Collaborate with others from diverse backgrounds in order to identify problems and find solutions.Proactive and persistent with well-developed analytical skills.Detail oriented with the ability to drive complex tasks to closure.Demonstrates expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.Proficient in MS Office.Knowledge on Lean enterprise practices to improve productivity

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, MS Engineering desired.Experience in Supply Chain Management a plus. 10 years of relevant experience in electrical gear design/manufacturing/procurement/applications.

Salary Ranges:$170,600.00 - $245,400.00
