About the Opportunity  

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and well-rounded candidate as a Senior/Principal Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist in our established Waste Management & Decommissioning business, who will be responsible for leading internal ground engineering capability growth as well as assisting in sales  and bid development. The candidate shall also provide technical input into a range of high-level national and international rad-waste safety case studies, site characterisation, geological and hydrogeological modelling development as well as lead on infrastructure and nuclear facilities ground engineering projects.

 

Our Waste Management & Decommissioning business has contracts in place and a growing order book that includes civil engineering frameworks requiring an experienced ground engineering professional with a background in earthworks and structures planning, design and management. We are looking to increase our team size to respond to current workload and anticipated further expansion of our business.  We are interested in hearing from experienced Ground Engineering professionals with experience within the nuclear sector, and with experience of decommissioning, as well as the infrastructure sector.

 

For the right candidate there are opportunities to develop into a team leader role within our organisation. This would include taking on responsibility for team management, mentoring of junior team members and business development opportunities.

 

We are operating under flexible working arrangements, with a mixture of office-based and home working environments. Our main office is in Harwell, Oxfordshire but with a diverse range of clients and sites, where we focus our services, across the UK.

Key Responsibilities\:

Support the wider radioactive waste management organisation by providing specialist geotechnical input and advice to on-going nuclear decommissioning, safety case development, engineered barriers and facilities & infrastructure engineering project work Support the site characterisation geological team on local and regional scale mapping, engineering geological site characterisation and engineering works, development of geological prognoses and hydrogeological modelling Assist in work winning activities and bid preparation  Price and produce GI specifications, schedules and BOQs in accordance with EN1997, BS5930 and ICE UK Specification for Ground Investigation Technical supervision of GI works and lab scheduling in accordance with EN 1997-2, BS 5930 and ISO 22475; 22476; 14688; 22282; 17892 etc. Liaise with Nuclear Clients (both nationally and internationally) to assist in the development of safety case studies and geological siting assessments Interfacing with site contractors  Conduct earthworks assessments and asset inspections Rock mass stability assessments for cuttings, shaft and tunnel works Contribute to the development of ground models and data archives (utilising GiS, openground, holebase, leapfrog etc.) Produce vault and shaft engineering recommendations (ranging from high-level conceptualisation studies through to detailed design) for nuclear waste disposal applications Interrogate laboratory and field-testing data to derive ground parameters for geotechnical analysis Produce geotechnical factual and interpretive reports Produce geotechnical design and analysis reports (Including design and analysis of Retaining walls, Foundations, Soil Reinforced Earthworks, Slope stability, MSE structures, ground improvement methods) supported by traditional calculation approaches, numerical and FE analyses, in accordance with EN 1997-1 & 2, BS 6031; 8006 (1 & 2); 8004; 8002 etc. *

Experience\:

As a Senior/Principal Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist we would expect experience within the following areas\:

 

GI planning, supervision, logging, and test scheduling (both superficial and bedrock environments) Earthworks supervision, remediation, inspection, testing and geo-hazard identification Management of large data sets and parametric derivation Development of GIRs/ GDRs and GFRs All aspects of geotechnical design (foundations, earthworks, retaining structures, reinforced earth etc.) in accordance with EN1997 and British standards CoPs Earthworks classification and mass haul planning/ management An advanced user of numerical modelling tools for geotechnical and geoscience analysis is preferrable and the ability for coupled Thermo-Hydro and Seismic modelling would be advantageous An understanding of the UKs GDF programme and the NWS strategy for long-term disposal of Nuclear Waste Conducting or assisting in BAT studies for nuclear sites for remediation and both near-surface or deep disposal (interim end-state or end-state) Ability to think conceptually and develop feasible high-level ideas (below ground disposal systems, remediation measures, barrier systems) for high-profile nuclear clients
