Senior Principal Scientist, Translational Medicine (Ophthalmology)

The Department of Translational Medicine leads biomarker discovery and development efforts for programs in Early Stage Research through Phase III clinical trials. We use relevant pharmacodynamic biomarkers to evaluate target-engagement and mechanism of action of candidate therapies as well as prognostic biomarkers to guide patient selection. Our department is responsible for developing biomarker strategies, designing and implementing biomarker assays, and interpreting biomarker results. Biomarker team leaders within the department provide scientific leadership on biomarkers for clinical trials ranging from early proof-of-concept through global Phase III.

The Opportunity

As a valuable member on the Translational Medicine (Ophthalmology) team you will be:

Partnering closely with Research Immunology and Neuroscience leading preclinical biomarker discovery efforts intended to support early and late stage research Ophthalmology programs and core disease areas

Serving as the biomarker representative on cross-functional project teams, internal reviewing committees, and attending external conferences.

Leading biomarker sub-teams to define decision-enabling biomarker strategies and integrate biomarker activities for projects in Development.

Writing biomarker sections of clinical and non-clinical protocols, reports, and regulatory filings by publishing results in high quality journals and participating in or initiating external collaborations.

Delivering strong written and verbal communication, partnering with Research, Bioanalytical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Preclinical and Clinical Pharmacology, Biostatistics, and Bioinformatics, as well as with external partners.

Who you are

PhD with 6+ years of post-doc/industry experience in Neuroscience, Ophthalmology, Immunology, Cell Biology, or a related field

Experience in, and deep technical understanding of, cellular and molecular lab techniques including cell culture, primary cell isolation from tissues, molecular biology, ELISA, qRT-PCR/RNAseq/scRNA-Seq and WB is required

Familiarity working with adeno-associated viruses a plus

Preferred candidates will have prior Bioinformatics experience (omics, pathway, network analysis, etc.) with good programming skills in Python or R and/or prior experience in the study of cellular/molecular pathways that contribute to retinal disease.

A record of high quality research as demonstrated by publications in top tier journals and external presentations is required.

Candidate must demonstrate a high level of independence and be able to develop hypotheses and direct analysis plans.

Strong writing and communication skills and demonstrated success working on cross-functional research or clinical project teams is required.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California is $176,600- $328,000.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
