Senior Principal Scientist; Global Health, Nutrition and Claims
The Senior Principal Scientist provides scientific and nutrition expertise and leverages scientific network to enable the development and execution of Mars Snacking mid to long-term growth strategy achieved through breakthrough innovation for competitive advantage.
This position leads the development and execution of health claims initiatives, nutrition and health policy, and related issues management.
This position creates and coordinates aligned scientific messaging, and represents Mars Wrigley (MW) in key external organizations, to create a scientifically based regulatory environment.
What are we looking for?
PhD in Nutrition or related medical science.
Minimum 10 years’ experience in scientific affairs / nutrition with food products and/or related product categories (such as food supplements, cosmetics) with proficiency in food law and nutrition policy.
Minimum of 5 years of general experience with a food company
A solid working knowledge of food regulatory and human health issues; demonstrated track record of working successfully across functions to achieve shared goals; and proven ability to interact cross-functionally at all levels within the organization are required.
Experience working with trade associations and government agencies to clarify and resolve regulatory matters is required.
Travel Requires 20% travel
What will be your key responsibilities?
The Senior Principal Scientist develops and leads the strategy of global oral health, nutrition, health and claims initiatives. The position applies knowledge in nutrition, health and claims sciences to leverage benefits of our current/new products and performs a variety of other tasks to review and gain approval for claims, defend claims, and maintain claims knowledge systems and databases globally for Mars Wrigley (MW).
Health and Nutrition
Develops and communicates science-based information and positions and provides scientific guidance to key internal stakeholders (Health & Wellness, Science, Product Development, Corporate Affairs, Legal, Senior Management) on oral health, emotional wellbeing, ingredients, nutrition, claims, and emerging scientific and regulatory issues of interest to MW.
Leads the management of scientific issues for MW. Strongly connected with other Mars businesses and corporate team, the Senior Principal Scientist ensures that issues, trends, risks and opportunities are appropriately communicated to relevant R&D function and leaders, to help guide the business.
Develops and maintains strong scientific networks, and works with other Mars segments to establish science policy and influence scientific opinions, external scientific environment and key opinion leaders that benefit and further the company’s innovation and growth strategies on a global scale.
Manages scientific (oral health, nutrition, health and wellbeing) programs related to products, ingredients, packaging, functional ingredients, and other new technologies by working cross-functionally within MW, as well as with consultants and external industry and scientific groups
Claims
Leads scientific aspects of MW claims strategy, provides leadership and guidance across the SRA function and the business.Participates actively in the development of new concept, claims and communication.
Directs MW’s claims review and approval activities and provides strong partnership with Science & Technology business partners for the advancement of innovation platforms through Mars ‘Technical Readiness Level’ process.
Supports R&D teams by providing scientific guidance and consultation on proposed products and ingredients to assure that they meet nutritional guidelines, and desired labeling claims, and obtain approvals for ingredients and product claims.Drives regulatory-enabled development of consumer demand spaces by identifying opportunities for value creation.
Evaluation of product and claims readiness with a multi-dimensional approach (risk level/external landscape/time & investment needed for readiness), while providing best pathway for scientific substantiation to ensure compliancy upon commercialization.
Provides global governance to ensure compliance to MW and Mars global standards and polices related to health, nutrition and claims.
Leadership and Expertise
Provides strategic advice, solutions and technical expertise to regional SRA teams, R&D and regional guidelines and policies and ensure governance and compliance to these and other Mars policies.
Keeps abreast of key developments in health and nutrition via literature reviews, meeting attendance, and participation in trade association activities so that potential impact to MW and Mars Inc., can be examined and addressed.
Leads and input complex SRA/R&D projects.

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between the range listed below, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, if eligible, including variable pay, medical and dental benefits, participation in 401k plan, and paid time off benefits. Eligibility for these additional elements depend on the position offered and the employee’s work schedule (i.e., part-time schedule, store associate).
