Senior Process Control Engineer

Job Summary
The Senior Process Control System Engineer is responsible for transferring business needs into a process control plan.  Elements of the process control plan/strategy include fit-for-purpose automation systems that allow better measure, monitor, and control of processes in real time, resulting in yield improvements, more stable operations. Integration of MES/data historian, improving insights in (critical) process parameters, improving plant stability (eliminate known disturbances). Maintain a sustainable cyber security solution by embedding the cyber security controls and practices in the site’s organization, with a focus on cyber security for the OT (Operational Technology) domain. The Senior Process Control System Engineer is the linking pin and facilitator but does not necessarily have to do all the work. Process engineers, automation engineers, project engineers, contractors, etc. are often the workers.

The Senior Process Control System Engineer has a key position within the Manufacturing organization and works together with several disciplines like process engineers, quality officers, plant performance engineers, instrumentation engineers, etc.  The person in this role will interact with site and global colleagues.  They will be extremely knowledgeable of the Dyneema process control systems in both theory and practice. Knowledgeable of process control system architecture and design. Knowledgeable of OT cybersecurity risks and vulnerabilities and the appropriate mitigation and protection measures.

Essential Functions

' Ensure all work is conducted in a safe and effective manner and all applicable procedures and policies are followed.  Take action to correct unsafe acts, systems and procedures. Abides by Avient Protective Materials procedures/policies regarding security, inclusive of:  employee security agreements; use of non-disclosure agreements with outside parties; control of Avient Protective Materials intellectual property limited to a “need to know” only basis; no unauthorized use of cell phones, cameras, computers or Avient Protective Materials property; reporting security threats and incidents; proper control of Avient Protective Materials property and keys. Maintain process control systems to produce highest quality product in a cost effective manner. Prepare and submit request for system (major and minor) upgrades and modifications. Assesses manufacturing capacity and the needs to upgrade control systems to meet regulatory requirements and process control improvements. DCS and Automation liaison for Dyneema. Responsible for ensuring consistency with other Dyneema sites. Maintain a sustainable cyber security solution by embedding the cyber security controls and practices in the site’s organization, with a focus on cyber security for the OT (Operational Technology) domain. Apply corporate/site requirements in the design, maintaining, and policy/procedures related to plant automation control systems. Provides expertise to solve the highest level system problems related to the DCS and other automated production equipment. Identify needs for data-analysis and promoting the use of existing functionalities of the MES system and related systems. Initiate and provide input to discussions on improving the functionalities of systems like MES and other data analysis tools. Professionalize and standardize systems, procedures, and methods to secure most logical/efficient way to ensure control system reliability and integrity. Develops, supports and implements advanced process control strategies to provide both short and long term operational improvements. Mentor junior Process Control Systems and Automation Engineers and serve as technology expert. Support production by driving improvements needed in the process control system, to improve production quality, safety, cost and efficiency. Comply with all job-related safety and other training requirements. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Minimum requirements for this position are an MS in a related technical field plus 5 years of technical experience in process control and automation. Or BS/BA in a related technical field plus 7 years of technical experience in process control and automation. Or AA/AS in a related technical field plus 8 years of process control and automation. Or 10 years of technical experience in process control and automation. Advanced knowledge of process control systems and methodologies including DCS, SCADA, etc. Demonstrated technical process control support and development ability. Advanced problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Diversified knowledge of automation systems Diversified knowledge of OT cybersecurity Diversified knowledge of multiple engineering specialties – including process, electrical, and mechanical. Knowledge of ICS computer and network infrastructure, Microsoft operating systems, and applications to include Microsoft office. Must be willing to respond to all types of emergencies and spend overtime hours in monitoring scheduled work when required. Knowledge of Siemens control systems.

Complexity of the Job

The Sr. Process Control System engineer will have knowledge of controls system design, functionality, interface to level 3 systems, and OT Cybersecurity. Changes implemented by the Sr. Process Control System Engineer will directly impact Manufacturing performance and cost. Focus on continuous improvement and recommendation for financial investments into process control systems will directly impact ROI and cash flow for the business unit. They will provide mitigating measures to secure the sites automation systems to reduce likely hood of cyber-attack and ensure the continuity of operations. They must participate in the daily support process controls On-Call Schedule.

May occasionally be required to lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds. 
Typically work is in a manufacturing environment where noise level is loud. 
Generally requires the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection, hard hat, respiratory protection.
Exposure to outside weather conditions is routine. 
May be exposed to working in extreme heat and humidity. 
May also be exposed on occasion to dust or fumes.
