Primary Responsibilities:
Assist the Materials Manager with leading the planning department by monitoring planning activities, coordinating efforts, and directing personnel to ensure timely supply of materials. Focus on processes, inventory, and logistics to maximize delivery and minimize risk and cost. Work with production and warehousing to monitor and maintain inventory levels and adjust levels based on production schedules and service forecast. Serve as a primary backup to the Materials Manager and provide leadership and support with new product development & process implementation, Controlling Goods Issued (COGI)’s & Bill of Materials, material procurement (Kanban, Release Order, Pick Per), cycle counting, obsolesces/excess inventory, and special demand/buffer inventory.
Perform the various Talent Development duties such as creating/revising job descriptions, conducting Talent Development Discussions, rating performance, establishing/tracking goals and completing annual wage reviews. Responsible for coaching, motivating, and developing direct reports to successfully take on additional responsibilities. Oversee staff including hiring, educating, developing, and discipline employees in compliance with company policy, applicable labor laws and good business practices.
Serve as a project leader or plant representative on cross-functional project teams. Identify areas within the department to proactively work to improve and provide solutions to drive continuous improvement activities. Promote lean principles through the implementation of Standard Work practices and where necessary, lean culture by coaching and/or leading Lean or Six Sigma projects.
Oversee automated workflow scheduling process. Analyze exception and change reports to modify the production plan as needed. Work with Supervisors and other necessary personnel to develop and implement the production plan. Create purchase orders for subcontract operations and monitor their progress. Meet with shop floor supervision daily to discuss capacity and production issues. Monitor workflow and communicate the need to expedite parts as needed.
Run and monitor machine load and capacity reports. Review machine capacities with Production Managers, Manufacturing Engineers, and Supervisors to discuss the production plan. Monitor machine capacities and make recommendations for when subcontract is needed.
Monitor overdue parts and potential supply issues within the plant and to other Company production areas. Work closely with the Production Planner Schedulers, Purchasing, production personnel, dock employees and traffic department to ensure materials arrive on due dates provided by the system. Be able to investigate root causes for materials arrive past due dates.
Attend department and production support meetings. Initiate and lead meetings to discuss scheduling conflicts. Prepare periodic reports to inform managers of supply chain and inventory issues. Be able to fill in for planners to support production when they are out of the office. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Associate degree (Business Administration or Supply Chain Management) required or if no degree, high school diploma and six plus years of related experience required.
Eight to ten years of extensive planning or related experience preferred. APICS certification preferred.
Strong understanding of Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) and be familiar with and able to manage in a modern Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) environment using software systems, such as SAP.
Proficient in Microsoft Office with emphasis in Microsoft Excel.
Good oral and written communications skills.
