Position Summary:

The primary purpose of the Senior Public Safety Officer position is to screen all persons entering the facilities of the University for proper identification. Through observation and patrol, safeguard institutional property, identify security issues and enforce institutional rules and regulations.  Responsible for the indoctrination, training, and supervision of a Public Safety Officer force.  Monitor, operate and report issues identified with security technology, software and devices. Develop, mentor and evaluate personnel to meet professional standards and customer expectations. Act as team leaders and works closely with Supervisor, Public Safety to accomplish department objectives. In the absence of the Public Safety Supervisor may be required to perform Public Safety Supervisor duties. In emergencies, facilitate the orderly evacuation of the buildings and structures.

 

Position Key Accountabilities:

Leadership and Training:  Provides team leadership, training (to include preparation of lesson plans, instruction, and distribution of educational materials for both entry and in service sessions) and ongoing professional development of Public Safety Officers. Works closely with Public Safety Supervisor to accomplish department objectives. In the absence of the Public Safety Supervisor, may be required to perform Public Safety Supervisor duties.

Patrol Responsibilities and Services:  Patrols university buildings and property on foot to prevent theft, vandalism or fire. Responds to calls for service and provides requested services in a timely manner and in accordance with policies and procedures. Actively screens all persons entering university facilities; challenges persons without appropriate identification and all suspicious persons. Serves as a front-line contact with clients and acts as the customer’s advocate to insure the efficient and effective delivery of security services.

Security:   Meets and confers with security and access control systems management to ensure staff has a clear and thorough working knowledge of security devices and protocols. Ensures security devices are operating reliably and as intended and devices in failure are reported immediately when detected.

Oher Duties as Assigned:   Other duties to include, but not limited to, emergency recall and/or may be required to remain onsite or work extended hours during man-made or natural disasters and unusual occurrences on campus.  Local or long distance travel may be required for training or other business purposes occasionally.

Certification/Skills:

Valid Class A, B or C Texas driver’s license.  Preferred Certification: One or more levels of certification (Certified Healthcare Security Officer, Certified Advanced Healthcare Security Officer, or Certified Healthcare Security Supervisor) from the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS).

 

Minimum Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.  Preferred Education: 2 Year College Degree.

Minimum Experience:

Two years experience as a Public Safety Officer. With preferred education, no experience required.  Preferred Experience: Three years of experience as a Public Safety Officer.

 

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
