This is a unique opportunity to join an early-stage development team that provides solutions to patients suffering from mitral valve disease. The position is on a fast-paced, early product development team within Abbott’s Ventures Organization. The individual who fills this role will play a pivotal part in the design, development and testing of this novel trans-septal prosthetic tissue mitral valve delivery system from early clinical feasibility through commercialization. Candidate will be responsible for providing engineering expertise in the creation and the development of the Catheter Delivery System for this class 3 medical device product in the fast-growing market of mitral valve replacement. Structural Heart Business Mission: Why We Exist Our business purpose is to restore health and improve quality of life by designing and providing device and management solutions for treating structural heart disease. **What You’ll Work On** + Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment to advance development of this catheter-based delivery system for trans-septal percutaneous mitral valve replacement + Conducts feasibility studies to verify capability and functionality + Develops and iterates on new catheter delivery system concepts from initial design to market release + Write and submit intellectual property (patents) + Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development + Investigates and evaluates existing technologies + Reviews or coordinates vendor activities to support development + Establishes and cultivates a network of support to facilitate completion of assignments + Interacts with vendors to leverage outside Abbott expertise + Plans and organizes non-routine tasks w/ minimal supervision to deliver appreciated results based on informed expertise + Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors + Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting designs, methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results **Required Qualifications** + Bachelor's degree in a technical field, preferably mechanical or biomedical engineering. + 5+ years of related work experience in a R&D function **Preferred Qualifications** + Advanced degree preferred. + CAD experience required (SolidWorks preferred). + Hands-on experience with trans-catheter heart valve delivery systems + Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team is essential + Effective communication, listening, and diagnostic skills, verbal and written, are necessary. The demonstration of effective collaboration and influencing skills will be key so that the candidate can achieve results within the cross functional team and with stakeholders around the company + Familiar with common materials, processes, and practices to produce catheter based medical devices. + Technical ability and passion for understanding complex mechanical designs, risk management and design controls + Experience with GD&T, stack-up analysis, and mechanical testing. + Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization. + Multitasks, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in timely manner. + Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail. + Has broad knowledge of various technical alternatives and their potential impact on the business. The base pay for this position is $86,700.00 – $173,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
