Role Summary:

The Senior Controls R&D Engineer is responsible for ensuring electrical panel designs used in new products are compliant with safety and code requirements and meet customer needs.  You will lead discussions with multiple vendors and create the electrical and controls system design requirements documents.  This engineer will work to integrate all the system components and control devices to perform the required tasks.  You will also need to work closely with the direct customer to ensure they can properly control our subsystem within their larger process.  As the electrical specialist on the team, you will be accountable for approving electrical system designs.  You will also help establish validation plans and provide support for any field issues.  You will act as a company-wide expert on VFD implementation and controls.

Responsibilities:

Electrical and Controls Product Development:

Direct electrical and control panel design activities.

Define requirements for panel design, certification, and quality.

Assist with proper selection, deployment, and configuration of components in the panels.

Lead efforts to adapt electrical panel designs to regions outside of North America.

Review electrical drawings, make corrections, and perform sign-offs.

Facilitate controls architecture definition and selection, especially for internet connectivity and remote monitoring technologies.

Review panel designs for compliance with NFPA 70 or ATEX requirements.

Work with other team members to enhance and evolve existing controls programs to improve functionality.

Make edits to the existing programs using Codesys and ABB Automation Builder.

Improve programs written for hydraulic cylinder motion control.

Look for ways to more deeply integrate the mechanical system components with intelligent controls – especially in diagnostics.

Assist other team members with system validation tests.

Cross-functional Collaboration :

Work with suppliers, mechanical engineers, product management, and project management to ensure electrical portions of the system meet all customer needs and are delivered on time.

Occasionally travel to production facilities, test facilities, and customer sites to assist with fabrication, validation, and support.

Requirements :

Bachelor’s degree in electrical or controls engineering, or a related field

4 years Engineering experience.

Travel, up to 20%, Domestic and International.

Preferred Experience / Skills :

Experience with bringing industrial power and control panels to market.

Experience with UL508a, NFPA 70, ATEX, and other industry best-practices for industrial panels.

Experience with specifying and configuring a range of different industrial electronic devices (VFD’s, Motion Controllers, Sensors, I/O etc.)

Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC programming and comfort with using and creating HMIs (particularly in Ignition)

Experience with various device communication protocols, such as Modbus, Profinet, Ethernet, or other similar protocols.

Ability to learn and understand the mechanical parts of the system – especially hydraulic - to facilitate programming and control of them (i.e. mechatronics).

Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

Ability to prioritize workload and attend to the highest-impact issues.

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

Detail oriented and quality-of-work focused.
