Senior Range Safety Engineer – New Glenn

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team, you will help shape the standards and processes used to construct, operate and launch all Blue Origin vehicles.  You will have a shared responsibility for establishing and maintaining a culture of high operational excellence, and to safety of our people, products and programs at multiple levels ensuring that best practices are institutionalized and shared across programs. 

Additional responsibilities include:

Serve as a subject matter expert on DOD/NASA hazardous siting standards including blast and fragmentation analysis, hazardous clear zone siting, and pneumatic energy release.Work within a small team to generate, refine, and implement company-wide standards and processes used to manage test operations for Blue Origin vehicles. Serve as a process and standard owner, and evangelize content across the company.Exhibit and maintain high standards for employees and cultivate a culture that emphasizes safety and operational excellence.Ability to understand the Maximum Credible Event of a large, pressurized test configuration to help determine the clear zone and potential danger to personnel and property based on fragmentation and overpressure. Recommend mitigations to use during testing to minimize risk to personnel and property during pneumatic testing.Create and manage Hazardous Site Plans to ensure Hazardous Fragment Distance assumptions and calculations are correct to protect personnel during pneumatic testingLead decisions on facility siting and test facility design based on expected test usage.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to safety and quality to advise on the technical basis for adjusting clear zone for executing safe and efficient test plans for rocket components. 

Qualifications:

Passion for our mission: Millions of people living and working in space!B.S. degree in engineering or physics15+ years of relevant experience as a member of a mature and professional operations team performing dynamic, high consequence operations or testing.5+ years of relevant experience leading teams in the disciplined conduct of dynamic, high consequence operations or testingAbility to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people Requirements development experience and strong technical writing skillsSelf-starter with a continuous improvement mindset and ability to learnSkills, experience, and ability to perform a lead role in safe ballistic test operationsStrong leadership skillsRelevant operations experienceStrong safety culture Very high judgement and ability perform duties in high pressure situationsExperience leading, mentoring and managing a small team in challenging, fast paced environment Ability to travel up to 25% of timeMust be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.Familiarity with DoD 6055.9 or NASA-STD-8719.12A required.
