Senior Research and Development Engineer

Right now, our Ordinance Systems team is hiring two experienced Research and Development Engineers. BAE Systems is looking for an experience engineer or scientist to direct process and product development activities at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. This position will spearhead variety of projects in our Research and Development (R&D) group including transitioning new materials to production as well as formulating new propellants. We believe in work-life balance and this position works a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off for this on-site position. As a Senior Research and Development Engineer, you will work with scientists and engineers to design and develop new propellants and new propellant manufacturing processes for commercial and government use. Prior experiencing working with energetics such as nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin, RDX, RMX and plasticizers is highly desired. Interested candidates should exhibit sound judgment, initiative and self-motivation, and be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision. Solid communication, teamwork and integration experience will be required to work effectively across functions at multiple levels. The ability to manage time effectively while dealing with a variety of issues in a dynamic environment will be key to the success of this individual. The successful candidate will under his/her own initiative: + Devise and refine safe, effective, and efficient methods of manufacturing energetic formulations. + Undertake experiments using corrosive, explosive, and toxic materials in a safe manner. + Specify lab and pilot equipment in support of development experiments and lab, pilot, and full scale process development. + Provide chemical support to BAE production departments. + Maintain adequate records of work and present in a form suitable for management and legal reporting. + Propellant formulation and manufacture, including but not limited to, manufacture of extruded double base (EDB) solventless propellants. **Required Education, Experience, & Skills** + Bachelor's Degree or higher in an engineering or science field required. + At least 4 years of engineering / chemist experience in energetics, composites or related product design. + Knowledge of how to conduct computer modeling of rocket motors, gun systems, and/or involved mathematical problems. + Knowledge of how to lead and mentor diverse teams in complex technical solutions, program execution and schedule and financial management. + Technical writing and presentation experience is required. + Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally. + We may consider candidates with less experience for a more junior role or more experience for a more senior role. **Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills** + 7 or more years of relevant experience in engineering. + Experience in propellant / energetics formulating, pressing, manufacturing and/or ballistic results. + Experience with computer aided design modeling to evaluate structural design, thermal effects, stress and stimuli, vibration, fatigue, etc. + Established defense industry knowledge and network. + Experience with interpreting and adhering to government military specifications. + Strong safety knowledge including hazard identification and knowledge of safety processes. + Strong project management experience. + Knowledge of WBS and application. + Strong customer focus. **Pay Information** Full-Time Salary Range: $83900 - $142600 Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
