We are hiring immediately for a Senior Research Associate in Bioinformatics to join the UTHealth McGovern Medical School department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology in Houston, TX 77030. In this role you will plan, conduct and direct a wide variety of bioinformatic analyses or genomics and epigenetics datasets from human or mouse models. The ideal candidate for this role should be familiar with bioinformatic pipelines for analyses of NGS datasets (Illumina) and/or long reads sequencing (Oxford Nanopore). Strong programming knowledge and experience with languages such as Python, R & Bash/Shell is highly preferred.

Plans, conducts, and directs a wide variety of bioinformatic analyses of genomics and epigenomics datasets from human or mouse models. Assists or leads the day-to-day activities for research project(s) that can impact the success of the research project(s).
Provides project management for research projects of considerable scope and complexity. Decisions impact the success of the research project(s).
Position Key Accountabilities:
Collects, evaluates, interprets, and documents research data to accomplish the objectives of a wide variety of scientific and research projects. Research activities are largley related to bioinformatic analyses. Influences project direction and outcomes by identifying opportunities to enhance, terminate, or re-direct research activities. Evaluates and interprets data and provides results to investigators to support publication. Maintains quality control checks and a safe environment in compliance with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulation and codes. (For example, maintain and manage the use of high capacity computer servers. Assists in the preparation and writing of research reports, manuscripts, papers and grant proposals for presentation and publication. Provides direction and training to lab personnel to ensure efficient, timely and high-quality results in compliance with all protocols, guidelines, regulations, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.Certification/Skills:
Considerable knowledge in basic and advanced bioinformatics. This candidate should be familiar with, and can independently use common bioinformatic pipelines for analyses of next generation sequencing datasets (Illumina system) and/or long reads sequencing (Oxford Nanopore), and are capable of choosing proper statistics required for analysis of, for example, RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq datasets, and single cell RNA-seq. Strong knowledge of programming languages Python, R, Bash/Shell and/or others are required. A good knowledge of gene transcription control and epigenetics is a plus.Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree in related field with four (4) years of related research experience including significant experience in a project management research role; orMaster’s degree in related field with two (2) years of related research experience including significant experience in a project management research role; or
Doctorate degree.

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects. This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
