Senior Research Engineer – Industrial and Building Decarbonization End-Use Research Lead
Argonne National Laboratory seeks a highly experienced and innovative Senior Engineer to lead our research efforts in industrial and building decarbonization portfolio, focusing on end-use applications. This newly created position will be responsible for developing a research portfolio initially focused on residential/commercial/industrial scale heat pumps and enabling the use of low-carbon fuels and no-carbon fuels for hard-to-electrify industrial equipment such as burners, furnaces, combined heat and power, etc., applications. The goal is to establish a world-class research program leveraging Argonne core capabilities in experimental and computational research. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in nurturing new capabilities that build on our unique strengths, enhancing our research portfolio in this critical domain, and actively engaging with external sponsors to secure funding and foster collaborative partnerships. + Carry out a world-class research program for Industrial and building decarbonization, train postdoctoral researchers and students (as appropriate), publish research findings in high-impact journals, present at conferences, and participate in public outreach activities to disseminate knowledge and raise awareness. + Contribute to the development of a strategic research plan for industrial and building decarbonization aligned with multiple DOE Offices in collaboration with other leaders at the laboratory. + Perform/guide experimental research and set-up state-of-the-art laboratory for testing of heat pump and industrial equipment with low and no-carbon fuels. + Perform/guide computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research, develop/improve existing computational tools and transition them to industry. + Identify emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges in these areas, propose innovative research directions to address them. + Cultivate relationships with external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry partners, and academic institutions, to secure funding and establish collaborative research initiatives. **Position Requirements** + Ph.D. in a relevant field such as mechanical or chemical engineering, or a related discipline. + A minimum of 7 years of experience in leading or conducting research in industrial and building decarbonization technologies, or related fields. + Proven track record of leading multidisciplinary research teams and delivering impactful research outcomes. + Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and experience presenting research findings at conferences and public forums. + Skilled communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. + Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork. + Ability to make our laboratory a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment where all can thrive. The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD3 or RD4) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position.
