Purpose
The Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) seeks to more fully document the contributions of the political lives of key Tejanos. The selected writer will work with the CMAS director to develop book-length critical treatments centering on the Mexican American experience. The ideal candidate is a political junkie who is able to connect current political trends to events of historical occurrences. Topics will be pre-selected. Work will require some archival as well as secondary source research and recording interviews. This monograph will include academic citations. The writer will use Chicago Style’s notes/bibliography system as well as Endnote, the bibliographic citation program. If the writer is unaccustomed to these systems, they will be trained. Work will include selecting photographs/images for the publication and working closely with a small production team to finalize all aspects of the project. Final result will be a book-length manuscript. The position is for one year with a possibility of extension.
Responsibilities
Research and analyze documentation through articles, archives, interviews, and other formatsDevelop materials into publications of interest (manuscript, articles, etc) reflecting on the lives of Latinos in TexasAssist production team in organizing materials and finalizing manuscript for publicationRequired QualificationsAt least 3 years of research/journalistic experience
Either a Ph.D. received more than 3 years ago, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and writing experience may be substituted as appropriate
Must be self-directed and able to work independently without continuous supervision
Must be meticulous in all aspects of fact-checking and writing.
Must be accustomed to adhering to strict deadlines
Must have a demonstrable understanding of postwar Texas political history
Preferred QualificationsMore than the minimum required number of years of experience.
Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Some print production experience
Salary Range$100,000 + depending on qualifications

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
