Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics

Position:

Senior Researcher Grade AC07 (70%) / Researcher Grade AC 08 (100%)

1-year Fixed term contract renewable for up to 3 years.

The Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics is committed to excellence in the provision of learning curricula for students training to become health professionals. It also offers honours, masters and doctoral programmes in Bioethics and Health Law. The Centre engages in research in diverse areas of bioethics, including work that is grounded in indigenous African thought. Its academic staff are involved in policy development, clinical ethical consultation, and community outreach programmes. The Centre seeks to fill the position of Junior or Senior research fellowship. This position is a three-year contract job, on an annual, renewable basis

The incumbent will support original normative and lead qualitative research on a topic relevant to the Wellcome Trust Research Fellowships in Humanities and Social Science (WT RFHSS) award entitled Decolonising Health Research in Africa: Exploring Epistemic Justice and Change that Matters , which is held at the Centre.

Brief Description

Key responsibilities include the following:

The incumbent will spend 85% of their time on research, 10% on providing administrative support and 5% on teaching.

Design, implement and lead various qualitative projects, systematic/scoping reviews, network analyses, and mapping that aim to increase our understanding of the problematic ways inclusion has been promoted in health research in Africa.

Design interview studies with health research ethicists in Africa to better understand how they conceptualize transformation in global health research.

Support the grant holder (Dr Cornelius Ewuoso) in the management of meetings with the project team, including developing meeting proposals, inviting team members, developing the meeting agenda and supervising all administrative arrangements.

Provide limited (co-)supervision of MSc and PhD students (if qualified), as well as ad hoc guest lecturing at the Centre.

Teaching in bioethics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The incumbent will research with Dr Cornelius Ewuoso and report to the Head of the Centre in all matters relating to the teaching and supervision of students at the Centre.

Requirements:

PhD degree in relevant fields such as the social sciences, humanities or sciences. Experience in conceptualizing, designing, implementing and leading qualitative research studies. Track record (demonstrated by publications) of driving and performing qualitative research,Knowledgeable in various qualitative research methods.

Preferences:

Some background in bioethics or research ethics.

Qualitative research experience on equity issues in global health.

Experience in conducting systematic reviews.

Some experience in supervision of post-graduate students and/or teaching at university level.
