The Senior Residency Advisor reports to the Assistant Dean of Advising and Career Development in the Office of Student Affairs and Wellbeing and plays a critical role in supporting students application to residency through data-informed individual and group advising sessions and workshops. The Residency Advisor is informed about all aspects of the application process for all specialties; analyzing statistics and reports and consulting/collaborating with Academic and Program leadership to support best practices and success in residency advising.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Senior Residency Advisor at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
Provide individual and group advising to medical students as pertains to residency application logistics, timeline, components, and strength of application. Understand, interpret, and disseminate results of statistical reports, integrating data from multiple sources; use results to guide student decision-making and recommendations Refer to appropriate resources for academic, career, and personal/wellbeing support from the School of Medicine, the Hackensack Meridian Health Network, and community. Develop, plan, and present workshops and seminars on relevant residency advising topics. Complete appropriate and timely record keeping/tracking of caseload, student meetings, and responses to student, faculty and staff questions.Plan and carry out departmental projects as assigned by the Director of Advising and Career Development including: training Specialty Mentors in residency application logistics, oversight of departmental programs, faculty development; working with Specialty Interest Groups, presenting programs during orientation, and preparing and reviewing reports. Independently research, identify, and stay up-to-date on resources, best practices and future trends in in order to continuously improve offerings to students. Serve on various committees within the School of Medicine including participation in Quality Improvement Projects aimed at curriculum development. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Master's degree in Student Counseling, College Student Personnel, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Higher Education Administration, Business Administration, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years of relevant full-time work experience in higher education. Expertise with data analytics and statistical reports and ability to extract relevant data from multiple sources and present effectively to students and staff. Demonstrated exceptional skills in coordinating and working collaboratively with diverse groups to achieve complex objectives. Ability to develop, manage and carry out complex projects with minimal supervision, utilizing best practices. Exceptional oral and written communication skills; ability to act in a sensitive and professional manner, comfortable and skilled in communicating about sensitive topics, and maintaining confidentiality. Demonstrated ability to take initiative, and manage, organize, and prioritize a workload of diverse tasks.Ability to generate effective correspondence, coordinate schedules and activities, exercise discretion and communicate articulately. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on a variety of tasks. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
PhD or equivalent in Student Counseling, College Student Personnel, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Higher Education Administration, Education or a related field. Experience in medical school operations. 5+ years full-time postgraduate experience in academic or career advising.
