The Opportunity

The Oligonucleotide Synthesis Chemist will work on site out of our San Diego, California office Infectious Disease division. The person hired will help lead a team of scientists responsible for oligonucleotide synthesis to help drive product development efforts, ultimately enabling commercialization of diagnostic tests as well as driving future improvements and applications. 

What You’ll Work On

Support R&D and product development efforts by providing expertise in nucleic acid chemistry and oligonucleotide synthesis, analysis and purification 

Identify, implement and optimize novel/new synthesis processes 

Develop and implement analytical and biophysical methodologies to help analyze, characterize and evaluate raw materials and finished products 

Operate and maintain DNA synthesis and purification equipment 

Synthesize small molecules using a variety of organic chemistry techniques 

Investigate problem areas and areas of desirable product improvement 

Manage projects by coordinating and prioritizing work streams, timelines and deliverables while driving project execution to meet corporate expectations 

Resolve technical issues with analytical methods and instrumentation 

Work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team to analyze, interpret, report, provide conclusions and present experimental data internally 

Provide high level analysis of experimental results 

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with other scientists, chemists, engineers and manufacturing personnel 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in biological or physical sciences, or mathematics; with 6 + years of progressively responsible positions in a research development environment. Or M.S. with minimum of 4 years' experience or Ph.D. in chemistry, analytical chemistry, or a closely related field.

Minimum six years of experience working in the IVD field in an industrial setting, or in a clinical, central or core laboratory performing oligonucleotide synthesis and post-synthesis modifications as well as analytical characterization of oligos.   

Proven track record of strong technical skills and hands-on experience with a diverse array of molecular and analytical testing methods  

Demonstrated expertise in nucleic acid manipulation, enzymology, and biochemistry as it relates to nucleic acid synthesis and measurement 

Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team to achieve desired results from general objectives 

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively 

  

Preferred Qualifications  

Experience and expertise in performing oligonucleotide synthesis and post-synthesis modifications as well as analytical characterization of oligonucleotides Hands-on experience building oligonucleotides with modifications, including various attachment chemistries, linkers, fluorophores, quenchers, modified bases, etc… 

Demonstrated expertise in small molecule synthesis using a variety of organic chemistry techniques.  

Ability to independently develop, optimize and validate analytical methods  

Experience developing analytical methods for the characterization of clinical samples 

Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects with minimal supervision 

Inventive, with ability to implement ideas in the laboratory 

Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret, and present data are essential 

Hands-on experience with multiple analytical instruments and methodologies, including mass spectrometry, HPLC, spectroscopy (UV-Vis), capillary electrophoresis, SDS-PAGE, OES-ICP, DSC, TGA as well as with a variety of wet chemistry methodologies is a plus

The base pay for this position is $86,700.00 – $173,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
