The Center for Immuno-Oncology (CIO) is seeking an experienced Lead or Senior Scientist to direct the Immune Assessment Laboratory in comprehensively characterizing human immune responses to cancer treatment and immuno-therapy clinical trials.

 

The CIO is a multi-disciplinary group dedicated to the discovery of novel biomarkers in immunotherapy clinical trials and clinical studies spanning many different tumor types.  The CIO’s Immune Assessment Laboratory (IAL) aims to provide researchers with access to the latest innovations in blood immune-monitoring (https://cioial.dana-farber.org/). Therefore, knowledge and experience with laboratory techniques used to study immune cell populations in whole blood and PBMCs such as mass and flow cytometry (CyTOF/FACS), along with protemic cytokine detection methods (Olink, Luminex), are required. The successful candidate will work onsite daily in close partnership with CIO Directors in this management-level role to lead a team of talented researchers, deploy cutting-edge technologies, closely partner with numerous clinical collaborators and contribute to high-impact publications.

Responsibilities

 

Provide scientific and technical leadership to promote the IAL and its technologies among the Institute’s academic and industry collaborators.Managing GCP- and HIPAA- compliant processing and biobanking of patient specimens from over 40 phase I-II clinical trials.Deploy cutting-edge immune-monitoring technologies, such as CyTOF, Spectral Flow, Olink Proteomics and Luminex assays.Design and execute scientific experiments, interpret data in the context of current literature and communicate results within DFCI and at national meetings.Manage and mentor the IAL’s wet lab staff (1 PhD Scientist, 1 Laboratory Manager, up to 5 research technicians, plus summer interns) to create a positive, productive team environment.Train new lab members in best practices and complete annual performance appraisals.Oversee and manage project goals, timelines, and deliverables in close collaboration with other CIO teams (https://www.dana-farber.org/center-for-immuno-oncology/)Maintain detailed budgets/chargeback using established software (iLabs) to ensure the sustainable financial operation of the IAL.Liaise regularly with biobanks nationwide, instrument vendors, lab suppliers and the Longwood Medical Area’s Flow Cytometry and CyTOF Core.Interact technically and intellectually with bioinformatic scientists.Implement best practices for collection, processing, banking and storage of patient specimens and laboratory health and safety.Recognize and proactively address potential challenges through regular communication with the IAL team and CIO directors.Contribute to co-author publications, conference presentations, and multi-center grants with NIH/NCI, plus external academic and industry partners.Communicate new findings in a translational research environment strongly focused on curing cancer through cutting-edge research. Qualifications PhD level candidate with applied professional experience (>6 years post-PhD) in immuno-oncology, human immunology, or oncology is required. Professional experience may include academia and/or industry research experience.Proven leadership/management experience >1 year supervising direct reports ranging from technicians to senior scientists, with excellent interpersonal skills. The successful candidate needs the ability to see the big picture, lead the team, meet all deadlines, stay on budget, provide excellent attention to detail, multitask numerous projects and clinical trials, communicate regularly with CIO directors and clinical collaborators.Mass Cytometry (CyTOF)/ Spectral Flow Cytometry for high-parameter analysis experience is required, proven by peer-reviewed scientific publications.Flow Cytometry and data analysis experience (e.g., FlowJo, Cytobank) proven by peer-reviewed publications is required.Excellent track record of scientific research is required.Direct experience with clinical trials is highly desirable.Financial/Budget management experience is highly desirable.
