SENIOR SCIENTIST (E)

Duration: Permanent

The South African Medical Research Council, Environment and Health Research Unit (EHRU) requires a suitably qualified and experienced Senior Scientist (entry). The applicant will be part of the Water, Sanitation and Society Programme and should have a keen interest in research related to water, sanitation and their impact on human health. To cover the multifaceted aspects of the post, we require an energetic person with a strong theoretical and practical background in environmental science with a focus on environmental health issues.

Responsibilities:

• Co-ordinate research projects, organization of data, manage small projects or aspects of large projects

• Supporting administrative procedures of research projects (procurement, data collection, operational plans)

• Capacity building of junior staff

• Contribute to proposal writing

• Develop or contribute to study protocols and SOPs

• Conduct quantitative analyses and write-up for scientific publication.

• Present research results at local or international conferences or at external meetings.

Core Requirements:

• Master’s degree in environmental science, water science, public health or similar qualification

• At least three years research experience working on environmental/public health studies

• At least two years’ experience in project management and data management (including supervising data collection; training of field teams, budgets)

• Experience with stakeholder engagement.

• Two lifetime publications with one as 1st authored publication in a national/international peer-reviewed journal

• Experience with quantitative analysis software (i.e. SPSS/STATA)

• Proficient in basic quantitative research methods.

• Experience with capacity development.

• Experience working in research environment with local and/or international partners and stakeholders.

• Willing and able to travel

• Code 8 drivers’ license

Advantageous:

• Experience working with environmental and/or public health interventions.
