Senior Scientist in Pharmacology (Bayliss Lab)

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a Senior Scientist to work in the laboratory of Dr. Douglas Bayliss.

The focus of this research position is to perform molecular, cellular, and systems level neuroscience research aimed at multi-scale understanding of sensorimotor mechanisms that regulate cardiorespiratory brainstem neurons, and control of breathing and autonomic function. The successful applicant will have experience in neurophysiology, with experience in electrophysiological, imaging and/or optogenetic approaches and an interest in applying those to in vivo behavioral analysis in cardiorespiratory systems. This individual will provide expertise in modern electrophysiological and imaging approaches, develop new experimental and analytic systems, and be responsible for instructing and overseeing work performed by laboratory trainees.

Applicants must have PhD and/or MD degree(s) with 5-7 years research experience by start date; they will have experience in establishing/utilizing the relevant experimental approaches, and instructing faculty, lab staff and trainees in their application. The qualified candidates are expected to have a genuine enthusiasm for scientific research, and an inclination to work productively in teams. The qualified individual is also expected to contribute to the writing of manuscripts and grants.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
