**Summary**
Sr Scientist, Molecular R&D leads molecular product development projects. This includes development, execution and interpretation of scientific research projects pertaining to molecular assay/ instrument integration. Common areas of research activities may include molecular biology, nucleic acid extraction, (real time) PCR and NGS work based on the needs of the team. This is a very senior level position for an individual known within the company and beyond their expertise and is expected to build a strong foundation in molecular product development. This position may manage a group of 3-6 reports. The individual will be required to represent the team and company to other business functions and external facing activities.
Responsibilities
+ Provides updates to senior management on status of experiments and studies
+ Manage a team of 3-6 reports.
+ Leads collaboration with assay scientists and engineers (system, product and software engineers)
+ Independently or with team members, plans research projects requiring initiative and judgement within defined procedures and practices
+ Independently selects methodological approaches and specific methods to achieve research objectives
+ Exercises judgment and initiative in making reach project decisions. Performs experiments in the laboratory as needed
+ Identifies, analyzes, and interprets project results. Leads communication of those results.
+ In collaboration with other scientists, write original proposals for research projects. Remain up to date on pertinent scientific related topics.
+ Prepares written reports on all phases of laboratory experimental work.
+ Attends scientific meetings, seminars and leadership team meetings.
+ Presents research results to colleagues internally and externally at scientific meetings.
+ Responsible for writing results as contributions towards patents or publications or presentations.
+ Authors or co-authors scientific papers and /or journal articles and technical reports.
+ Reviews and edits pertinent regulatory documents.
+ Reviews and edits pertinent regulatory documents.
+ Proficiency in creating detailed, accurate record keeping, maintaining lab equipment and laboratory supplies.
+ Prepares and defends patent disclosures and applications. Prepares reports, processes data for presentations, documentation and / or technical drafts Serves as Research Expert for cross functional team. Prepares and orders experimental components and supplies ahead of experimentation and as requested. The position may manage a group of 3-6 people. Travel may be required
**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**
+ Extensive experience with molecular techniques, in particular nucleic acid extraction, real time PCR and Next Generation Sequencing. Subject matter expert in recombinant DNA techniques, molecular assay/ molecular instrument integration during platform development, and ISO 13485/ FDA 21CFR820 design control procedure.
+ Experience in demonstrating and supervising technology transfer to a technical development team. Bench chemistry, data analysis, documentation and reagent optimization. Ability to become familiar with relevant scientific literature.
+ Comfortable handling biohazardous and infectious samples. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Working knowledge of GenBank searching, BLAST, sequence alignment and analysis, and tree building using Cluster and TreeView.
+ Reliability for executing extended scientific protocols. Ability to create novel protocols that deliver results and adapt and troubleshoot the results. Great presentation skills and able to articulate findings to various levels to management.
+ Working knowledge of required lab techniques.
+ Previous co-authorship on scientific journal articles/ patents a must.
**Education**
Bachelors or Masters degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical or Bio Engineering, or related scientific field.
**Experience**
+ 16-20 years’ experience in laboratory setting
+ Experience in demonstrating and supervising laboratory training with interns, graduate students, technical staff or post doctoral students
**Equivalency**
Depending on the area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in place of the stated requirements. Example: If a job level requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years of experience, an equivalency could include 8 years of experience, an Associate’s degree with 6 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 2 years of experience
**Pay Scale**
The estimated pay scale for this **Senior Scientist, Molecular R&D** role based in San Diego, CA, is $132,480 to 165,600 per year. Additionally, the position is eligible to participate in up to 15% of the company bonus pool. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on education, experience, skillset, knowledge, where the role is performed, internal equity and market data.
