About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Purpose

 

Our Lihir operation in the Reliability and Compliance team is now recruiting for the Senior Specialist – Fire System role. Reporting to the Electrical Compliance and Reliability Superintendent the successful candidate will be overseeing the design, installation, maintenance, and inspection of fire protection systems in buildings, including fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and special suppression systems, ensuring compliance with relevant fire safety codes and regulations, often acting as a technical expert within an organization, leading projects and providing guidance to other technicians or engineers.

The role will have the following responsibilities but are not limited to:

 

Set up Fire systems maintenance, inspection, and testing strategies

Set up a budget for fire systems, including contractors’ costs and parts

Liaise with Area owners to ensure they budgeted correctly for work

Gather cost estimates for contractors for inspection and rectification works

Ensure inspection regimes are adhered to by relevant legislation and AS 1851

Review inspection reports and document work in SAP

Minor scope of works

Liaise with Risk department and maintenance departments to coordinate work and develop plans for risk and audit actions

Manage Safety / Chess actions related to fire systems

Co-ordinated in conjunction with planners scheduled maintenance and rectification works for each area

In conjunction with the ERT team conduct fire system tests under relevant legislation and AS 1851Conduct Audits

Manage inspection regimes and strategies to optimize logistics

Review and update fire system Newcrest standards

Engage with the contractor management team to develop robust and cost-effective contracts with vendors

Ensure compliance with PNG and Australian standards for fire systems

 

Qualifications, Training & Experience

 

Certified Fire Alarm System Designer or other relevant fire safety certifications

Extensive experience in fire system design, installation, maintenance, and inspection

Strong understanding of fire safety codes and regulations

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse teams 

Completed Cert III in Fire Protection Inspection and Testing

Knowledge of the Australian Standards associated with the fire maintenance industry, particularly AS1670 and AS1851

 Knowledge of local Acts and regs associated with the fire maintenance. 

Mandatory testing, servicing & periodic preventative maintenance of all Fire Sprinkler systems, Fire Suppression systems, Special Hazards, Fire pumps, Fire hydrant systems and portable protection equipment

Able to complete all Fire Sprinkler systems, Fire Suppression systems, Special Hazards, Fire pumps, Fire hydrant systems and portable protection equipment maintenance Log 

 

Working Conditions

 

Must be open to FIFO in PNG

Ability to complete a pre-employment medical assessment

Must have proof of a completed Police Clearance within the last six months
