The Opportunity

R&D Core Team Lead (Medical Devices)

Our Neuromodulation business is an area of expertise for Abbott. This business includes implantable devices compatible with mobile technology to help people who suffer from chronic pain and movement disorders. Our Solutions include Eterna™ Rechargeable SCS System, Proclaim™ XR non-rechargeable SCS System, Proclaim™ DRG Neurostimulator, Liberta™ Rechargeable DBS System, and IonicRF ™, for radio frequency ablation.  These non-opioid therapies allow us to provide interventional pain therapy to patients throughout the pain continuum. Our deep brain stimulation technology for progressive diseases help people manage their Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor symptoms, steering away from side effects.

Our location in Plano, TX currently has an opportunity for an R&D Core Team Lead (Therapy Lead). This is an exciting opportunity to join Abbott's dynamic, growing new product development team committed to innovating the treatment of chronic pain and motion disorder. The R&D Core Team Lead role is a leadership position accountable for developing and delivering new therapy products for Abbott Neuromodulation Division.  Abbott Neuromodulation is on the forefront of implantable device miniaturization and data science for improved patient outcomes.  Through advanced embedded systems and external mobile device apps, we create an ecosystem for developing rapid advancements in the field of neuromodulation through modern data science and analysis.

WHAT YOU’LL DO 

The R&D Core Team Lead (Therapy Lead) is a leadership position accountable for developing and delivering new therapy products for the neuromodulation division of Abbott.  The R&D Core Team Lead is a critical thinker who applies an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to plan, design, develop, verify and launch a lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions.

Lead a technical team composed of the various R&D functional groups, act as the design authority responsible for R&D deliverables for programs, including complex system design trade-offs, program and product risk mitigation, technical problem solving and implementation decisions.Work cross functionally within R&D to lead the definition, architecture, design, and delivery of strategic products needed to support the therapy portfolio.Build and inspire the cross-functional team to create innovative, meaningful, business-impactful products, and will ensure that their programs successfully navigate the design controls process and deliver high-quality products to the market. Acts as the primary representative of R&D for development programs and promotes collaboration with various departments/disciplines through knowledge of the interaction between departments/disciplines and how their products/processes affect one another.Oversees and guides troubleshooting issues to determine root cause and possible engineering solutions.Leads analyses for affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, MRI Safety, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, cybersecurity, regulatory, legal, privacy and other specialties factors for defining the interfaces and interactions between complex components of a Neuromodulation system.Guides the development of planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of requirements, architecture, design, tools, risk, issues, opportunities and the technology readiness assessment processes. Resolves cross-functional organizational and technical issues using systematic problem-solving methodologies in identifying, prioritizing, communicating, and resolving issuesChampions continuous improvement of processes and work methodologies by interfacing with peers/cross-functional groups and analyze activities to improve workflow and work processes.

Required Qualifications 

BS degree in Engineering (Biomedical, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, Systems Engineering) or related Engineering/Scientific Field (medical device, defense or automotive industry)Minimum 10 years of related work experienceDemonstrated success leading multi-discipline engineering teamsDemonstrated success in technical proficiency, creativity, and independent thoughtStrong leadership skills, including the ability to adapt well to fast-paced environments with changing circumstances, direction, and strategy.  Ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business resultsExecutive presence and presentation skills. Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills necessary to develop and maintain smooth, cooperative working relationships with all levels of management and to drive change across business functions. Recognized experience leading and managing programs, handling resources, planning, scheduling, budget maintenance, and risk mitigationExperience in a highly regulated environment

Preferred Qualifications

15+ years of experience in R&D development5+ years of experience as a technical lead and/or architect roleVast experience in the successful delivery of complex technology programsDemonstrated ability working in systems engineering and familiarity with systems engineering principles (i.e. Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), best practices (INCOSE) and deliverables and statistical data analysisExperience with designing active implantable hardwareExperience with process development of polymersExperience or knowledge MRI systemsExperience in wireless communication systemsExperience working with cross-functional teams, collaborative, team orientedExperience developing products in the medical device industry is preferredExperience implementing various product and process improvement methodologies (e.g. Agile Methodologies, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing)

The base pay for this position is $109,300.00 – $218,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
