Senior Staff Product Designer, Platform Ecosystem

Discord is about giving people the power to create space to find belonging in their lives. We want to make it easier for you to talk regularly with the people you care about. We want you to build genuine relationships with your friends and communities close to home or around the world. Original, reliable, playful, and relatable. These are the values that connect our users and our employees at Discord.

As a Sr. Staff Designer and leader within the organization, you’ll actively define what design quality means within Discord Design, and collaborate across teams to define and execute future evolutions of the product.

On the Platform Ecosystems team, you will partner with UXR, Product Managers, Engineers, and Data Scientists on the Platform Ecosystems team to craft intuitive and delightful experiences for two critical audiences: App developers who bring delightful activities, bots, and games to the platform, and users who need intuitive ways to discover, and enjoy them with friends. You will combine deep user empathy with a balance of UX, UI, prototyping, and visual design skills to enable frictionless experiences, and mentor a growing team of designers in doing the same.

If you're interested in joining a passionate team of designers that are creating fun experiences for millions of people across the world, Discord is the place to be.

What You'll Be Doing

You will craft the standard for visual caliber and quality within Discord, and on your team (Platform Ecosystems); identifying gaps or improvements for our design system and regularly making patterns that are adopted across the design organization. You will lead vision-setting initiatives across teams, bringing diverse product ideas into one cohesive vision with tactical design deliverables, and regularly present and communicate your designs to peers and executives to gain alignment. You will partner with the Platform Ecosystems Design Director to lead team rituals, introduce new ways of working, and eliminate design debt and inconsistencies within the product. You will operate as a player-coach, owning the direction, design decisions, and quality bar for your own work, while providing mentorship and direct feedback in service of other’s work. You will detangle and simplify the Apps user experience, using wire-frames, user journeys, prototypes to deliver intuitive product experiences that lead to higher App trial and re-engagement. You will actively mold the design organization — collaborating with design leadership to own and deliver design-wide programs to establish new ways of working and craft standards.

What you should have

8+ years of experience designing consumer-facing products. Experience in leading designers or teams at an initiative level. Confidence in your ability to execute, and coach others in making design decisions, leading discussions, and communicating out to the wider organization. Strong, pro-active communication skills, forming ideas and presenting them to your cross-functional team to develop product strategy and roadmaps. A desire to deeply understand the "why" before defining the "how" and use it to develop a strategic product perspective, and vision. A high level of design craft, and a commitment to maintaining a high bar for design implementation as you see work through from design iterations to detailed documentation, and QA. A portfolio of work on which you were the primary designer leading large-scale, high impact projects for both desktop and mobile. Experience working with, and contributing to a design system.
