We are currently seeking a Structural Engineer for our Vancouver Office, with analysis and design experience on large and small hydro power projects. The academic background and experience in the seismic analysis and design, particularly involving Response Spectrum and Time History Analyses of hydro power structures will be an asset. If you have strong communication and interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and understand innovation, we want to hear from you. Working closely with our senior engineers and designers, your primary role will be to act as a technical resource on challenging projects. The position will allow you to directly apply and develop your knowledge in design of concrete and steel structures involving dam spillways, intake structures, powerhouse, hoist support structures and stability analyses of dams and related structures. 

 

Key responsibilities will include: 

 

Working in a fast-paced, dynamic team with other engineers in a multidisciplinary environment 

Performing design calculations, analyses using software programs and documenting findings and recommendations in a report 

Preparing specifications for a variety of structural engineering tasks involving construction and/or rehabilitation of concrete and steel structures for hydroelectric generating stations, substations, and dams 

Developing preliminary and detailed designs as well as overseeing and guiding the preparation of civil/structural drawings for construction 

Taking ownership of the technical deliverables 

Leading and managing the process of engineering commitments in accordance with scope, schedule, budget and procedures to ensure successful project completion 

Managing the design teams of junior structural engineers and designers, for successful completion of the project(s), while ensuring a continuous career development of staff 

Ensuring compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures for all design activities 

Maintaining structural engineering work procedures and computer aided design programs 

Preparing and contributing to technical memos and reports, within areas of expertise 

Stamp documents and drawings as required 

Assist in preparing proposals  

 

Qualifications and Experience: 

 

A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on structural design from a recognized university 

A Master’s degree in structural engineering will be considered an asset  

8+ years of experience working on hydropower projects, involving the analysis and design features of hydropower projects, such as:  

Stability analyses of dams and other related structures 

The analysis and design of hoist supporting structures and hoist towers 

Seismic analysis of structural steel hoist tower structures, and concrete dam structures, involving Response Spectrum and Time History Analyses 

Design of powerhouse structures, involving turbine foundations, substructure and superstructure 

Design of penstocks (buried penstocks, above ground penstocks and liners)  

Design of gate structures including Vertical gates, Radial gates, Bulkheads, Stoplogs etc.   

Balance of Plant design for hydroelectric facilities including design of concrete and steel structures, platforms, cranes and monorails etc. 

Registration as a Professional Engineer in BC or other Canadian Province (candidates with strong international experience and eligibility for P Eng. designation in Canada will be considered) 

Site experience will be considered an asset   

Strong hands-on working knowledge and experience with structural engineering analysis software, preferably STAAD Pro and SAP2000 

In-depth knowledge and experience using Canadian codes and standards for Hydro Power structures 

Solid experience in the preparation of reports and specifications  

Strong client focus and a desire to achieve results including the ability to manage multiple priorities and time lines 

Aptitude for working in multi-disciplinary teams and the ability to interact successfully with all levels of staff, clients and vendors 

Strong interpersonal and time management skills with a commitment to achieving engineering excellence
