Senior Systems Engineer
Job description

The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for leading the technical and architectural design, implementation, and management of the Windows, Linux and Network environments in the enterprise. This position also ensures the performance, monitoring, and optimization of the systems and provides guidance, administration, and technical support to the IT team.

This is a full-time position, with some on-call duties. Less than 10% travel is required outside of the Baltimore area.

Responsibilities:
• Designs, installs, and administers systems environments with faster provisioning, scaling, and resiliency. Provides instructions, direction, and mentoring to others.
• Follows system administration and security best practices, standards, licensing agreements, and department policies and procedures.
• Provides expert consulting and mentoring to IT management and staff on the evaluation, integration, and testing of new operating systems and software products.
• Acts as a mentor and resource for IT and operations teams.
• Makes decisions on the enterprise level networking structure and issue resolution.
• Creates systems that align with organizational goals and objectives.
• Receives and prioritizes system administration work, project-oriented tasks, and service desk requests of varying severity. Documents issues via ITSM system and document repository and meets SLA’s.
• Performs security administration on designated technology including systems, applications and network security devices. Manages vulnerability and patch management.
• Independently handles complex technical assignments involving integration with third party hardware/software applications.
• Leads systems teams on various projects.
• Research emerging technologies and recommends technologies that will better support the organization’s corporate strategy.
• Maintains documentation on processes, environments, procedures, and configuration information.
• Serves as a subject matter expert within the group on Systems/Network.
• Supports the company’s strategies and departmental goals by accomplishing tasks as assigned.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
• At least 5 years of experience as a Windows system administrator, or similar role.
• In-depth knowledge of Windows server and client operating systems, such as Windows Server 2022, Windows 11, etc.
• Proficient in windows system and network administration, such as Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, etc.
• Familiar with Windows system and network security, such as firewall, antivirus, encryption, etc.
• Skilled in Windows system and network troubleshooting, such as ping, tracert, netstat, etc.
• Experience with Windows system and network monitoring and optimization, such as PowerShell, SCCM, SCOM, etc.
• Experience with Windows system and network backup and recovery, such as Veeam, Backup Exec, etc.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, under pressure and with minimal supervision.
• Experience with Scale HC3, Proxmox, or other virtualization hypervisors

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee may occasionally lift up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities are required, which includes close vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
