Senior Tax Analyst for New Zealand Custody Operations responsible for assurance of all client tax application and reporting, acting as tax ‘expert’ and liaison.  Key contact for internal stakeholders and third parties, including tax advisers and tax authorities.  Role reports to the NZ Tax Manager with another experienced Senior Tax Analyst also in the team. 

This is a role with a lot of variety and responsibilities that provides many opportunities to develop at a fast-paced technology company.  Particularly important throughout 2022/23 will be making a material contribution to a number of large projects at FNZ that have tax requirements.

Role Responsibilities

Assist the Tax Manager ensuring overall effective New Zealand custody operations, including all global markets in which our clients invest.Contribute to significant project work with Tax as a major delivery over next 6-12 months.  This will be direct and material participation in project teams across FNZ set up for particular issues, for example: working with Business Analysts or Developers on required system changes.  Project opportunities at FNZ are across a diverse range of issues and could include KiwiSaver, fund registry, FATCA/CRS or launch of new propositionsGeneral consultancy for Operations and Client Relationship Services (CRS) - tax queries, for example how the platform treats a product and distributions received for tax purposes.Monthly tax return submission and tax payment to NZ Inland Revenue.Accurate recording of tax events against client accounts.Adherence to procedures and controls for roles within the tax team, in line with GS007 audit requirements.Communication relating to tax matters with multiple internal stakeholders; Head of Investment Operations, Finance team; members of Senior Management; the IT development Teams, Client and Relationship Services Team; Pricing and Product team; Corporate Actions team.Identification of tax issues and/or development (legislative or otherwise), and implementation of solutions to manage and/or mitigate impact to business and client.Understanding of our client reports and the impact of tax on the reports.Coordination and production of annual tax reports to investors for NZ custody client holdings. This includes providing tax reports to investors on behalf of some of the largest financial institutions in the financial services / wealth management industry.Liaise with financial instrument and service providers where necessary – issuers, fund managers, tax advisers, and tax authorities.Involvement in FNZ’s annual US tax obligations with the IRS – some US tax knowledge is an advantage, but not a requirement.Opportunity to work closely with both the Wellington-based New Zealand CEO, COO and many other members of senior management.In longer term, opportunities to assist the wider Finance Team for NZ corporate tax issues including income tax and GSTIn longer term, opportunities to get involved in Australian tax issues – some existing knowledge an advantage, but not a necessity.

Accuracy - to ensure that completion of regular tasks are true and accurate.Efficiency - to ensure that completion of regular tasks are executed in a timely manner and deadlines are met.Effective communication - to ensure that information is communicated effectively to necessary parties and in a timely manner for purpose of rapid resolution.Record keeping - to maintain records as required ensuring the investment process is transparent to regulators and external auditors.  Breaching of both internal and third party errors. Procedures - create and maintain relevant and robust documented procedures.Information Systems - to make effective use of the Company’s information systems that are relevant to the role.Planning - to prioritise the work to ensure all activities are completed on time and within agreed deadlines.Other tasks - to undertake any other projects/tasks as may be required to facilitate the smooth operation of the company.

Experience Required

Degree qualified Ideally already CA qualified, but possibly still in process of becoming CA qualified or in the process of becoming a legal professional (but still with accounting knowledge)Embrace our business – high profile contributor to the FNZ Wrap business.Possess an analytical mind – be able to assess data or situations from multiple angles and make decisions and ability to problem-solve.Ideally possess broad financial product knowledge.Experience in New Zealand’s PIE and FIF tax regimes an advantageKnowledge and experience in US tax issues relating to investments a bonusSolutions focussed, hard working and positive attitude.
