Senior Technician – Acute Care Orthopaedic Surgery and Ortho Trauma

Akron General’s 52B Orthopaedic/Surgical Unit is a post-surgical unit that specializes in knee and hip replacement, shoulder, ankle, and spinal surgeries. Patients in this unit require immediate and frequent mobilization, which decreases their hospital length of stay and post-surgical complications. 

 

A caregiver in this position works 7:00am – 3:30pm.  

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

Prepare units, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer, or emergencies. 

Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.  

Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight, and height. 

Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction.  

Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 

Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. 

Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 

Document patient care in the electronic medical record.  

Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.  

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

High school diploma or GED. 

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or obtain certification during new hire period.  

Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills. 

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA).  

One year of recent acute care experience.

Physical Requirements:

Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
